Today, the Delaware Youth Soccer Association joined State Associations across the country in supporting a historic step to make US Youth Soccer (USYS) part of U.S. Soccer — bringing the organizations closer together to invest more in local soccer and create better experiences for players and families.

USYS State Associations voted to approve the change during their Annual General Meeting, beginning a two-year integration process on September 1. The decision brings USYS's decades of experience and reach across youth soccer together with U.S. Soccer's resources and national scale.

"This was always my vision when I took on this role over 7 years ago," said Chad Reed, DYSA President. "This investment was my ask of U.S. Soccer leadership any chance I could. Delaware is positioned to be at the forefront of these exciting opportunities."

"This is an exciting moment for soccer in Delaware and across the country," said Sebastian Acosta-Nijamkin, DYSA Executive Director. "We supported this decision because we believe we can accomplish more for the game by working together. Our clubs, leagues and communities have built an incredible foundation for soccer in Delaware, and this gives us the opportunity to build on that with greater resources and stronger connections."

What this means for soccer in Delaware:
This two-year integration process will bring more resources and investment to soccer locally, strengthen State Associations' ability to support and grow the game, create more opportunities for people to play and stay in the game, and better support the clubs, leagues, coaches, and referees serving players every day.

Congratulations to all of the teams that participated in the Mickey Wherry Spring Recreational Tournament!
Thank you to all of the players, coaches, families, referees, volunteers for making the event possible.
Thank you to Kent County Parks and Rec for being a great host.

Mickey Wherry was a dedicated individual that stepped up and volunteered to organize the Interclub Soccer League for DYSA. As an avid soccer fan, Mickey enjoyed watching, coaching, refereeing and being a part of an organization that would impact so many players today. Mr. Wherry also served as the Recreational Director for Kirkwood Soccer Club and was a committee member for the East Region President’s Cup.
Mickey lost his battle with amyloidosis in October, 2016. To keep Mr. Wherry’s legacy live on, Delaware Youth Soccer Association hosts a recreational tournament annually. Proceeds from this tournament are funneled into a scholarship in Mickey’s memory. This scholarship is awarded to an individual that exemplifies the qualities that Mr. Wherry stood for “Fair Play".
