Pictured is Ferdinand VanDerveer, who was highlighted in yesterday's post.

Brigadier General Ferdinand VanDerveer (1823–1892) was born in Middletown and began his career as a lawyer before answering the call to serve in both the Mexican–American War and the Civil War. As the organizer and first colonel of the 35th Ohio Infantry, VanDerveer led hundreds of Butler County men through some of the war's most significant battles, including Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge.

His dedication to public service extended beyond the battlefield. VanDerveer served as Butler County Sheriff, later became a judge, and remained a respected leader throughout his life.

Today, his legacy lives on as one of Middletown's notable citizens; a soldier, public servant, and community leader whose impact reached far beyond Butler County.

VanDerveer's final resting place was at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ohio.

Moving into the next decade of Middletown's History, we all know that a major war (Civil War) would encompass this time period. Ahead of this time, Abraham Lincoln would make as stop across the river from Middletown at the West Middletown depot.

During the War, the 35th Ohio Volunteer Regiment would be led by Middletown Native, Ferdinand VanDerveer. During the course of the war, 4,444 Butler County men served in the conflict.

135 Years Today: this advertisement ran in the MIddletown Daily Signal for a new subdivision called Bellemonte. Bellemonte subdivision not to be confused with Bellemonte Street was laid out and divided into lots. Also pictured from the 1895 Butler County Atlas shows the Bellemonte neighborhood laid out.

Streets from 1895 that retain their names today are Stanley, The Alameda and Superior. Blue Ball Pike is now Sutphin and Grand Avenues. Washington Avenue is now Highland. Lexington Avenue is now Sherman Avenue. East Woodlawn Avenue is now Easton Avenue.

As a continuance of the America250, we move to 1836-1845. In 1837 Middletown, elected the first town council which included I.T. Gibson as the frost mayor. The first newspaper came along, The Middletown Mail, in 1839. Middletown was beginning true growth in this decade with pork packing and to***co becoming a big trade here in the area.
