Boy Scout Troop 97 Londonderry

Boy Scout Troop 97 Londonderry Boy Scout Troop 97 Londonderry Township Middletown, PA meets Tuesdays 6:30 - 8pm at Londonderry Scouting Complex. Join us, there's always something fun to do!

Troop 97 is sponsored by the Londonderry Fire Company and is very active, planning monthly outings and camping trips. We meet weekly on Tuesday nights at the Londonderry Scouting Complex from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. We work on Scout Skills and merit badges at meetings, which provides the opportunity for every boy to advance and earn merit badges. This also allows each boy to have an opportunity to learn

how to teach, if he already has a particular skill or badge. We also place an emphasis on public service--one of the main pillars of Scouting which benefit the community. Our troop is a small, close-knit group of about 20 Scouts. Parents and Scouts choose their level of participation, though most everyone attends the weekly meetings. We welcome new members and suggest attending one of our Tuesday meetings to get to know us.

A recent Court of Honor recognized achievements of our scouts and leaders. Life Scouts Jesse Reigle, Daniel Orris, and Adrian Komanski summarized their Eagle Scout Service Projects for beneficiaries MASD Blue Wave Marching Band, The Ronald McDonald House, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, respectively. Scouts received 57 Merit Badges in a variety of programs such as Kayaking, Motorboating, SCUBA training, Wilderness Survival, Camping, Archery, Robotics, Moviemaking, Pottery, and Climbing. Scoutmaster Bill Lee accepted the Camp Rodney Honor Troop Award recognizing the troops participation in morning and evening flag ceremonies, passing daily site inspections for cleanliness and organization, completion of training courses, and extra activities like the Polar Bear Swim, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, and attendance at Chapel service. Several leaders earned certifications in Snorkeling, Paddle Craft Safety, Swimming & Water Rescue, Safe Swim Defense, and Safety Afloat. The World Conservation Award was presented to Jordan Paul, Jace Kryscio, and William Weber for their efforts to think globally and act locally to conserve and improve our environment. Our ceremony concluded by honoring scouts who advanced in ranks: Second Class Scout Zeke Dunkleberger, First Class Scout William Weber, Star Scout Rece Shiffler, and Eagle Scout Isaac Dunkleberger.

Troop 97 will be participating in Scouting for Food the first two Saturdays in November. As you are able, please support this program by donating non-perishable items for collection and distribution to members of our community.

Thank you for encouraging and celebrating our scouts and leaders.

Hey Troop 97,

A huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time and energy at Geyers Church VBS this week! Your dedication and willingness to serve our community have been greatly appreciated.

For those still looking to earn community service hours, or if you're just able to lend a hand, there's one final chance tonight, Thursday, June 26th, to help out on the final night of VBS.

Your help tonight would be incredibly valuable as several of the scouts who have been volunteering consistently throughout the week have other commitments. We could really use the extra support to wrap things up smoothly.

If you can make it, please come to Geyers United Methodist Church. The program runs from 6:15 PM to 8:15 PM. If you have questions, reach out to Matt Pauley. Every little bit of help makes a difference!

Thanks again for all you do for the troop and the community!

Honor Troop Award Received by BSA Troop 97

At the recommendation of Second Class Scout William Weber, Troop 97 spent a week at Resica Falls Scout Reservation in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania kayaking, rifle shooting, fishing, geocaching, and more. “All 17 of our scouts attended this summer camp and collectively participated in 84 Merit Badge (MB) classes,” reported Scoutmaster Bill Lee.

Weber earned the Climbing MB where scouts learned how to belay their climbing partner using friction of ropes. Star Scout Jordan Paul took advantage of the camp’s pool to earn the Swimming MB while Second Class Scout Rece Shiffler and Scout Isaac Haviland completed the Geocaching MB. Woodworking, animal science, and game design were popular classes as well as Eagle Scout required MBs First Aid, Citizenship in the World, and Emergency Preparedness. The troop had plenty of time to simply enjoy the amenities of the camp including the water trampoline at the lake, canoeing on the Delaware River, and the early morning Polar Bear Plunge.

“We had 100% participation of our scouts and leaders in a camp service project of chopping up downed trees and stacking the wood which cleared the site for construction of a new lodge,” said Lee. Throughout the week the troop earned arrow heads for having the cleanest camp site.

During the closing ceremony, four Troop 97 scouts were recognized for excelling in certain programs: Jace Kryscio for superior welding, Isaac Dunkleberger as top fisherman, Jesse Reigle for excellence on the ATV course, and Daniel Dunkleberger who not only won the triathlon of running, kayaking, and archery but set a new camp record! “My favorite memory of camp was when Isaac (Haviland) sang Pizza Man in front of the entire camp during the closing camp fire,” exclaimed First Class Scout Xavier Derr. The Resica Falls camp staff acknowledged the outstanding participation of Troop 97 and presented them the Honor Troop Award.

“We have an incredible group of adults who share their time and talents with the scouts. Some of the leaders use their work vacation to transport the guys, the trailer, all their equipment, and attend the week at summer camp,” said Advancement Chair Julie Myers. “It is quite a commitment, and their dedication is remarkable. We can’t thank them enough.”

Additional summer adventures the troop enjoyed were a weekend at Pinchot State Park practicing scout skills of cooking, tent camping, and canoeing, and volunteering at the Geyers United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School.
