At its annual meeting last week the Middletown Garden club recognized several community members for their support and volunteer efforts. Long time residents Steven Kronkite and Paul Brindamour were honored with a Civic Improvement Award for their outstanding efforts to increase and enhance the tree canopy in our community and beyond. Club member Rob Rickenback was recognized for his dedication to maintaining clear communication between the club and the national organization. And outgoing President Kim Wuestefeld was presented an award for her excellent leadership through a period of transition. Also during this meeting, club members voted to accept Kathy Meyering as incoming President and Lynne Garner as Vice President.
Many thanks to Leah Gastler at Kalmia Gardens for a beautiful setting for our meeting, and to Connecticut Flower Collective for its donation of dahlia tuber favors! (Photos by Sheryl Rutledge)

The pollinator garden at Harborpark needed a haircut! The first photo shows the long row needing our attention. Recently a hearty group of Garden Club and Pollinator Pathway volunteers trimmed the Russian Sage and pulled invasive weeds to make way for the beautiful blooms yet to come. Many thanks to the nine people who showed up to help. Stay tuned for future opportunities to help!

Upcoming program: Public welcome!
“Turning Away and Coming Back:
Mill Towns, Legacy Dams, and the Rivers
We Forgot”
Thursday, March 19, 1 PM
Portland Library

Our scholarship speaker for this year is Travis Kelley, the 2025 awardee of the Morris Family Fellowship in the Making of the American Landscape.

New England’s rivers built
the mill towns—-or did the towns build
the rivers? This lecture traces how 14,000
dams have shaped the ecology and our
experience of the region’s waterways
and asks how design might help communities find their way back to the water.
The presentation will focus on the
regional research the GCA helped make
possible, with a preview of the design
work it has inspired.
Mr. Kelley's work aims to
understand how the impact of legacy
dams manifests in the built environment
in the Assabet River corridor in
Massachusetts. Over 14,000 dams have
fundamentally altered New England's
waterways and have profound impact
on the way towns spatially relate to their
rivers. Using local case studies in tandem
with others from the wider New England
regions, selected for their innovation
around dams, connections are drawn
between historical and
contemporary conditions along varied
waterfront sites. This will provide
decision makers with insights that can
help them foster development in their
communities that bring greater
ecological health and social
connectivity to the riverbank.

What a wonderful turnout for our program on Monet’s Gardens. Presenter Rhea Higgins spoke on how Monet planned his gardens in Giverny with a painter’s eye. She used both contemporary photos and Monet’s paintings of the gardens to illustrate his design choices.

Save the date! The next film in The Elements: An Annual Environmental Film Series, will be Ripples of Plastic, shown at Russell Library in Middletown on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 2:00 pm. We hope you'll join us for this film about the health and environmental impacts of plastic pollution. As always, the film is open to the public and free of charge.

As described on the film's website, Ripples of Plastic is an eye-opening journey through the unseen impacts of plastic pollution in the Great Lakes region. Guided by Dr. Sherri Mason and other regional voices, viewers will witness the vast extent of contamination pathways, effects of microplastics, and the unexpected toll on human health. Beyond individual action, the film inspires a collective movement for transformative progress toward a plastic-free future. You can watch the film trailer at https://www.ripplesofplastic.com/.

A facilitated discussion will follow the film with Dr. Kat Owens, University of Hartford Professor and artist.

Please preregister at https://rockfallfoundation.org/event/ripples-of-plastic/. For more information, phone the Conservation District office at 860-346-3282.

The film series is sponsored by the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District, Middletown Garden Club, Russell Library, The Rockfall Foundation, and Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts, Bailey College of the Environment, and College of Film and the Moving Image.
