Exciting News from the Whitehall Community Garden Association!

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a $5,000 grant from Delmarva Power and the Delaware Nature Society as part of the 2024 Sustainable Community Grants!

This funding will help us enhance our community garden, allowing us to foster sustainability and strengthen our connections with nature and each other.

With this generous support, it will support the mission to create more engaging and accessible spaces for all residents to enjoy. Our mission is to cultivate not just plants, but also community resilience and a love for the environment.

A huge thank you to Delmarva Power and the Delaware Nature Society for investing in sustainable projects that benefit our neighbors and the planet! Let’s continue to grow together and make our community even more green and vibrant.

University of Delaware Master Gardener night at the Extension Garden is July 11 from 6:30-8:30. Great garden with gardeners on hand to answer questions. Free and open to everyone. I went last year. It was great. They have a wonderful demonstration community garden.

Hello neighbors - Spring has sprung and we've got gardens on our mind!

Just to update everyone on things - we are organizing a legal agreement between the Whitehall Community Garden Association non-profit organization and the Appoquinimink School District, and purchasing insurance, and then we are ready to break ground and get supplies!

Things to think about:

- Laying a foundation for a shed, and then building a shed.
- Laying down cardboard and landscape fabric to kill the grass and be the foundation for the rest of the garden - 5,000 sq feet.
- Setting up our raised beds, filling them with soil and running a drip irrigation system throughout the beds.
- Setting up a handicap accessible way in and out of the garden, and picking a handicap accessible bed that fits with our aesthetic (the brown metal beds).
- Getting plans for an easy compost system.

When we have the agreement and insurance finished, we will set up a meeting and settle into some construction dates.

Time to get excited!

We had a little “pick up party” in front of Katie’s house yesterday for everyone who ordered a meal kit - it was so nice to see all the smiling faces I’ve been missing since the summer time!

Thank you all for your support for the Whitehall Community Garden Association through our Moe’s fundraiser! We were able to sell 19 fajita kits!! If you have ordered, please note that the pick up is from 5:30-6:00 PM at 517 Wheelmen, NOT in front of the school (as your email suggests). If you like this type of fundraiser, please share your thoughts with us (good or bad) 🙂

Again, thank you! We raised $228 for the garden!

We will be partnering with Lorewood Grove Elementary School and the Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids program to make this joint community and school garden. HFHK have lesson plans for each grade - check them out! They work with over 50 schools in Delaware already and have been a huge help in planning and logistics with us already.
