Everyone feels cranky sometimes! 😠💛

After reading the book Cranky, our four- and five-year-olds talked about what makes us cranky and remembered: all feelings are OK, but not all behaviors are. Together, we brainstormed helpful ways to respond when those cranky feelings show up!

This supports the Maryland State Department of Education’s (MSDE) early learning goals for managing emotions and behaviors and building healthy relationships—important skills for making friends, learning together, and preparing for kindergarten.

🌟 God’s promises are as big as the night sky!

One of our Sunday school classes learned about God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as countless as the stars. Then students created their own night sky pictures—even an axolotl constellation! ✨

As they created, they reflected on God’s promises for their own lives: they are loved, they belong, and God is with them wherever they go. 💛

Caring for our church, supporting our ministry! 🏫❤️ Repairs to the sanctuary roof facing Alternate 40 and the bell tower were funded through the thoughtful investments of our Finance Committee. We’re grateful for the faithful stewardship that makes this work possible! We are also grateful for the hard work of our trustees who keep our facilities, safe, clean, and available for ministry.

Overnight on Sept. 20-21, a devastating fire swept through neighborhoods in Bukavu, Congo, causing the deaths of at least five people and destroying more than 500 homes, including the homes of more than 70 United Methodist families.

This disaster comes amid several ongoing crises in the area that have already displaced thousands of people, including violence from the M23 rebellion, a recent Ebola outbreak, and a separate fire in Bukavu on Sept. 10 that swept through two schools and surrounding neighborhoods, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 students and destroying hundreds of homes.

UMCOR has provided dedicated support to the people of eastern Congo throughout these tragedies, and as our Disaster Management Office in East Congo mobilizes in response to this fire, a UMCOR solidarity grant is supporting their relief efforts and needs assessments.

As we remain in ongoing prayer for eastern Congo, we echo this call for solidarity from United Methodist Bishop Antoine Tambwe Kalema of the East Congo Episcopal Area: “In all circumstances, we must think of the Lord. Sooner or later, all this suffering will end, and the population will return to normal life. Let us entrust ourselves to the Lord, for victory will come from Him. Let everyone mobilize wherever they are to support the victims of this fire.”

On August 26, the world stood in solidarity with communities along the Nepal-Tibet border after a powerful and unprecedented flash flood caused catastrophic destruction. At least 1,450 people have died, over 6,000 people remain missing, and 3,629 people are living in displacement sites in Rasuwa, Dhading, and Khatmandu. Profound damage to infrastructure and roads has complicated search and rescue operations and slowed relief efforts.

Since late August, UMCOR has sent nearly $90k in relief funds to partners on the ground, including United Mission to Nepal, The United Methodist Church - Nepal, Amity Foundation, Hong Kong, the Methodist Church in Nepal, and ACT Alliance, which have helped to provide essential food and non-food items to thousands of affected families and households along the Nepal-Tibet border.

As relief and recovery efforts continue, UMCOR is coordinating a longer-term response through United Mission Nepal and an interfaith coalition of disaster response organizations. We remain in prayer for those who have lost their homes, communities, and loved ones, and for the aid workers and responders providing care to those who need it most.
