What is Superhero Connection?
Superhero Connection is an organization in Middletown, Delaware that visits children in need to boost their confidence and find their inner superhero! Corey Sparks, a local high school senior, started the mission after a trip to Comic Con in San Diego. He purchased a custom suit to wear to the convention, and when he came home, he wanted to do more as Spider-man. When a friend of his mom’s son was in the hospital, Corey had an idea. We set up a video conference for Spider-Man to call the young man. The child loved it. That small ripple started a wave, and Corey began making visits as Spider-man for children who were sick, bullied, or had special needs.
Corey has always had a special connection with children, being the oldest brother of a child with autism. He has been a camp counselor for four years at a camp for children with Down syndrome, he is a graduate of the Partners in Policymaking disability advocacy class, and has trained with the Beau Biden Foundation Stewards of Children. He was honored with two awards from the 321 Foundation, an organization that empowers people with Down syndrome - Volunteer of the Year and Supporter of the Year. Corey has been awarded the National Honor Society Essay Award for his essay on Education Inclusion and is planning on going to college for Occupational Therapy. He is also fluent in American Sign Language.
Each visit we do with a child or children is unique and special. We rely on donations from the community and all visits are free of charge. Spider-man will come bearing gifts, usually something we know the child will like. We try to get as much information from the parent/caregiver as we can before we show up, so the child knows how important they are to us. We will do photos, autographs, and anything else the child needs to feel a boost of confidence. After the visit, we will skype with the child if they need another chat, and we even send follow-up letters and autographs in the mail.
