Welcome to Anne Schulz!

The Middletown Rotary Club is delighted to welcome Anne Schulz as our newest member.

While Anne is new to Rotary membership, she is certainly not new to Rotary service. Through her work with the Newport County YMCA, Anne has become a valued partner in many of our community initiatives over the years.

Anne has been a familiar face at Rotary projects, working alongside our members through the Island Interact Club for teens, annual coat drives, and community cleanups. Her dedication to creating opportunities for all people to participate, contribute, and feel a true sense of belonging has made her a valued community partner and friend of Rotary.

As Director of Access and Social Responsibility at the Newport County YMCA, Anne works to build stronger community connections and create programs and partnerships that help make our community more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.

Anne was first introduced to Rotary through our work with Interact and quickly recognized that Rotary's mission of service and community engagement closely aligned with her own values.

We are thrilled that what began as a partnership has grown into Rotary membership and look forward to the experience, leadership, and passion Anne will bring to future club activities.

Please join us in giving Anne a warm Rotary welcome!

What if every family on Aquidneck Island had access to fresh, healthy food close to home? That's the vision driving the work of Aquidneck Community Table (ACT), featured at this week's Middletown Rotary meeting.

Lucien Rosenbloom, ACT's Market and Events Manager, shared the organization's inspiring mission to create a healthier, more equitable food system for Aquidneck Island by helping people grow, eat, and connect through local food.

From community gardens and farmers markets to school-based education programs and food access initiatives, ACT is working to ensure that fresh, healthy food is available to everyone in our community.

Members learned about ACT's more than 80 community garden plots, hands-on programs that engage children from kindergarten through high school, and innovative efforts such as SNAP Bonus Bucks that help families stretch their food dollars while supporting local farmers.

We were especially excited to hear about ACT's plans for "The Table," Aquidneck Island's first year-round food and community hub. This innovative space will bring together fresh food, wellness programs, gardening and culinary education, community resources, gathering spaces, and opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect, and thrive.

Thank you, Lucien, for sharing the important work ACT is doing to build a healthier and more resilient Aquidneck Island for all.

What a wonderful evening at the Newport Gulls for Town of Middletown Night!

Members of the Middletown Rotary Club had a fantastic time volunteering at the game and helping make the evening a success. With perfect weather, great baseball, and an enthusiastic crowd, it was everything a summer evening on Aquidneck Island should be.

One of the highlights was working alongside students and staff from Looking Upwards, Gulls interns, and so many dedicated community volunteers. The Newport Gulls are much more than a baseball team—they are an outstanding community organization that provides affordable family entertainment while giving back to the communities they serve.

The Middletown High School Chorus delivered a beautiful National Anthem, town officials and council members were out in force, our school principals were there supporting the community, and the Town of Middletown helped celebrate America's 250th anniversary by distributing RI 250 commemorative hats.

There was a wonderful spirit in the air all evening—a great reminder of what makes Middletown such a special place to live, work, volunteer, and raise a family. Events like this bring together neighbors, community organizations, local leaders, and volunteers in the very best way.

Thank you to the Newport Gulls, the Town of Middletown, Looking Upwards, and all the volunteers who made the night so memorable. The Middletown Rotary Club was proud to be part of it!

One exciting example is Rotary's Haiti National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Initiative (HANWASH), which is helping bring sustainable access to clean water and sanitation to communities throughout Haiti.

From Aquidneck Island to communities around the world, Rotarians are making a difference.

On May 27th, the Middletown Rotary Club welcomed Jack Doyle of the Old Colony & Newport Railway for a fascinating look at the past, present, and future of rail service on Aquidneck Island.

Jack shared how the railroad first came to Newport in 1864 and played a major role in connecting travelers, transporting troops and materials during World War II, and helping shape the growth of our region. He also spoke about the dedicated preservation efforts that began in 1979 to save both the historic rail line and its important second track for future generations.

Members especially enjoyed hearing about the vintage rail equipment, the evolution of the beloved dinner train experience, and the group’s continued work operating historic locomotives today.

Perhaps most exciting was the discussion about the future potential of rail transportation on Aquidneck Island. As summer traffic and event congestion continue to challenge Newport County, preserving rail corridors today could help create transportation solutions for tomorrow — easing traffic, improving access, and offering new ways for residents and visitors to travel to and around Newport.

Thank you, Jack, for an engaging and inspiring presentation and for the ongoing efforts to preserve an important part of our local history while keeping an eye toward the future.

What does it really take to end polio?

Most people know Rotary has been fighting polio for decades. But this powerful article from Rotary International tells the deeper story — how ordinary Rotarians around the world continue helping push one of history’s greatest public health victories across the finish line.

From local fundraisers and awareness events to partnerships that vaccinate children in the world’s hardest-to-reach places, Rotary members continue proving that small actions can create global change. 🌎

Since 1988, polio cases worldwide have dropped by 99.9% — and we are closer than ever to a polio-free world. Rotary remains one of the leading organizations in that effort. ()

This article is well worth the read and a wonderful reminder of the power of persistence, partnership, and Service Above Self. ❤️

A huge THANK YOU to Pizza Hollywood in Middletown for generously donating pizza for our recent community cleanup! 🍕

After filling bags with windblown litter and covering the Gaudet campus from end to end, our volunteers were more than ready to trade grabbers for pizza slices.

Let’s just say the cleanup crew worked fast… but the pizza disappeared even faster. 😊

We are so grateful for local businesses like Pizza Hollywood that help support community service efforts and keep our volunteers smiling (and well fed!).

Thank you for helping make the day such a success!

Cleaning Up Middletown — One Bag at a Time - What looked at first like “not too much trash this year” quickly turned into five large bags of litter collected from the Gaudet Middle School grounds and adjacent athletic complex during the Middletown Rotary Club’s recent community cleanup!

Students from the Newport County YMCA afterschool program joined Rotarians and community volunteers for an afternoon of teamwork, fresh air, and service as part of Rotary’s EPIC Day of Service and ongoing Litter-Free Rhode Island efforts.

Volunteers spread out across the campus, parking lots, fields, and surrounding areas collecting food wrappers, bottles, windblown debris, and construction-related litter scattered by recent storms.

One YMCA director shared afterward:
“The kids are in state testing this week, so it was a perfect outlet for their energy. And they loved the brookies! Till next year!”

Along with cleaning the area, participants also signed the Litter-Free Rhode Island pledge and saw how small actions can make a big difference in keeping our community beautiful.

After an hour of hard work — and a very noticeable difference — the group gathered for pizza, lemonade, and of course, brookies.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the cleanup such a success!
