Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens Fund

Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens Fund This fund exists to establish, maintain, and enhance a lasting memorial to the 37 township residents lost in the WTC attack on 9/11/01. But, we need your help.

The History
The morning of September 11, 2001, began like any other. Many of Middletown's residents arrived at the train station or ferry in order to make their way to work in Manhattan. Just a few short hours later, our small town would be forever changed as America experienced one of the worst attacks in the history of our country. As the Twin Towers were hit, and ultimately collapsed, thousands

of people arrived at our docks seeking safety, as our first responders tended to the scared and injured, and even rushed to the city to assist with the rescue operation. Many of us watched from the beach as the towers fell, saw the smoke filling the sky and even felt the ashes raining down on our town. It soon became clear that 37 of our family, friends and neighbors would not be coming home. Many of their cars sat empty in the train station parking lot as a harrowing reminder, as our town struggled to come to grips with such a devastating loss. Our home of Middletown suffered the largest loss of life of any town outside of Manhattan. The days and weeks - and even months - following the attack were surreal and heartbreaking, but somehow, amongst all the fear and sadness, the people of Middletown came together to support the families whose lives had changed forever. Our town has even lost first responder, Joe Capriotti, to 9/11 illness. We vowed to Never Forget. Now, as we approach the 20 year anniversary of 9/11, we are renewing our promise to our neighbors by adding to and enhancing the beautiful memorial we built so many years ago. Please show your support for our community by donating to our WTC Memorial Fund Drive.

Last week, the Give2Those Stride and Ride Tactical Team stopped by the Memorial Gardens to pay their respects. Give2Those is a national non-profit with the mission of supporting our veterans and first responders. Each year, the Stride and Ride Tactical Team embarks on a relay that spans 911 miles, beginning at Boston Logan Airport’s 9/11 Memorial and concluding at the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.

Give2Those founder Heather Viveiros and Doug Pickel, owner of Azuant Custom Plaques, presented a custom-made, wooden flag plaque that was made with “purpleheart” lumber to Greg Capriotti. Greg’s father, late MTPD Detective Lt. Joseph Capriotti, was known as the “keeper of the list” of the residents we lost on 9/11 and personally notified every single family who lost a loved one that day. He ultimately gave his life for 9/11 and died from a 9/11-related illness.

Thank you to the Stride and Ride Tactical Team for honoring our hero, Detective Lt. Joseph Capriotti. ❤️🇺🇸

Give2Those invites the community to their fifth and final Stride and Ride Relay on Monday, 10/4 at 1 PM. The event will take place at the Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens, where the nonprofit will be leading a silent walk-through to pay their respects. The Stride and Ride Tactical Team will also be dedicating a plaque to late Detective Lt. Joseph Capriotti, who ultimately gave his life for 9/11 and died from a 9/11-related illness. Capriotti was known as the “keeper of the list” of the residents we lost and personally notified every single family who had lost a loved one that day.

We hope to see you there as we honor and remember our fallen friends and heroes. 🇺🇸
