Friends of Troop 3 Newport

Friends of Troop 3 Newport Scouting is designed to take place outdoors. It is in the outdoor setting that Scouts share responsibilities and learn to live with one another.

Our mission is to make the Scouting experience more accessible, more affordable, and more meaningful to all Newport, Rhode Island area youth by financially underwriting local scout programs. It is here that the skills and activities practiced at troop meetings come alive with purpose. The outdoors is the laboratory for Scouts to learn ecology and practice conservation of nature’s resources. We rec

ognize the opportunity for more Newport youth to take advantage of scouting programs; however, we know that scouting requires financial investments in uniforms, proper footwear, clothing, hiking equipment, tents, trailers, and camping equipment. For many Newport families, these financial barriers are significant. The charitable purpose of Friends of Troop 3 Newport -- established in 2020 -- is to financially underwrite the youth-development programs of BSA Scout Troop 3 of Newport, Rhode Island. Our specific programs include:

-- using social media channels to collect financial donations and deploy such donations toward our programs that have long term benefits for local youth interested in the outdoors and scouting,
-- broadening scouting opportunities by creating and administering charitable summer campership (e.g. Camp Yawgoog in Richmond, RI) or scholarship programs,
-- contributing to direct expenses related to Narragansett Council-approved Eagle Scout projects,
-- organizing and supporting alumni programs with the purpose of enhancing the programs and activities of Scout Troop 3,
-- providing a qualified, tax-exempt organization to collect and hold long term assets donated to Troop 3,
-- promoting and nurturing an ongoing relationship and camaraderie among Troop 3 alumni, via social networking and outreach-to-alumni programs, and
-- assisting, as necessary, in the annual, formal re-chartering of Troop 3.

Historic cold? No problem for Troop 3. We spent the weekend cabin-camping at Camp Wanocksett in New Hampshire. The boys even went tubing on Saturday, proving that there’s no such thing as bad weather when you pack the right gear.

Interested in helping to establish the first BSA troop for girls on Aquidneck Island? Troop 3 Newport -- founded in 1947 -- would like to hear from you! Just send a note to Alex Ellermann, [email protected].

Eight BSA troops for girls currently operate around Providence. Several operate in South County, but none on Aquidneck Island. Troop 3 scouts enjoy exciting outdoor activities across New England every month of the year. We’ve minted 99 Eagle Scouts during our history. We think it’s time to extend this unique opportunity to local girls, ages 11-17. If you like the outdoors and coaching young people, please check out this opportunity to lead.
