👣 Small changes can be early warning signs.

In wound management, identifying micro-trauma, pressure points, and pre-ulcerative changes on the toes early can create an opportunity to intervene before tissue breakdown progresses.
For wound care professionals, early recognition + appropriate offloading + assessment of perfusion can be key components of a limb-preservation approach. 🩺
As we this September, let’s keep looking closely—and recognizing the signs before they become ulcers.

👣 Look beyond the ulcer.

A toe ulcer can provide valuable clinical clues about the bigger picture—from arterial perfusion and tissue viability to neuropathy and overall vascular health.

For wound care professionals, a comprehensive assessment means considering why the ulcer developed, what may be impairing healing, and what the surrounding tissue is telling you. 🩺

This September, as we , let’s keep the focus on early recognition, thorough assessment, and the vascular factors that can influence wound healing.

🩺 A pulse is only one piece of the vascular assessment.

Palpable pedal pulses do not necessarily exclude Peripheral Artery Disease. The location, severity, and distribution of arterial disease can influence clinical findings, so a comprehensive assessment remains essential when evaluating a lower-extremity wound.

👣 Don’t just check the pulse. Look at the whole picture. Consider perfusion, tissue characteristics, symptoms, and wound-healing progress when PAD is suspected.

Quiz #2 Answer

Did you get it right? đź‘€

The answer is A) Dependent rubor. âś…

Dependent rubor is a clinical finding associated with significant arterial insufficiency and can provide an important clue when evaluating lower-extremity perfusion.

Clinical takeaway: When a wound isn’t progressing as expected, remember to look beyond the wound and assess the perfusion. 🩺👣

DID YOU KNOW? 👣
PAD is an important consideration when evaluating a nonhealing lower-extremity wound. Don’t just assess the wound. Assess the circulation.

The answer is in! 👇

âś… TRUE

Not all patients with PAD present with classic intermittent claudication. Asymptomatic and atypical presentations can make recognition more challenging.

Clinical takeaway: Don’t let the absence of classic symptoms rule out PAD.

As we continue to raise awareness this month, let’s keep looking beyond the obvious and considering the vascular component of lower-extremity assessment. 👣
