Today, a group of MHS students had the opportunity to visit the beautiful campus of University of Tennessee for an exciting college tour experience! Students explored campus life, learned more about academic programs, and got a firsthand look at what college life can offer after graduation.
On our way to Knoxville, we also made a stop at the historic Norris Dam, where students were able to take in the scenery and learn a little more about one of Tennessee’s most well-known landmarks.
Trips like these help students begin thinking about their future goals while exposing them to new opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom. We are proud of our students for representing MHS so well throughout the trip!

We are incredibly proud to share that GEAR UP recently had the opportunity to attend the East Kentucky Leadership Conference with two outstanding Middlesboro High School juniors, Ava Barnett and Morgan Martin!

Ava and Morgan represented our community so well as they spoke on an important and timely topic of why students in rural areas choose to return home after college… or why some choose not to. Their insight, honesty, and perspective gave a powerful voice to the experiences of students right here in our region.

Opportunities like this not only highlight the leadership and potential of our students, but also help spark meaningful conversations about the future of our communities. Ava and Morgan made us proud, and we can’t wait to see all they accomplish next!

💼💰 Real World Experience: Freshmen Step Into Adult Life! 💰💼

Our freshmen recently participated in an eye-opening Real World Experience, where they got a firsthand look at what life after high school can really look like!

Each student was assigned a career and corresponding average salary, then challenged to budget and make real-life financial decisions. With the help of community partners, students received checks and learned how to manage a check register from Hearthside Bank and Community Trust Bank.
Students then had to make big decisions, like whether to rent or buy a home, with guidance from Middlesboro Housing Authority and Bisceglia Realty.
Transportation was next, as Justin Mayes helped students determine what type of vehicle fit within their budget and insurance needs. Appalachian Regional Healthcare also provided valuable insight into healthcare costs and medical bills, giving students a realistic look at another major life expense.
To round out the experience, Food City helped students plan and purchase groceries, bringing their budgets full circle!

This impactful program has been a tradition for years thanks to Youth Service Center Coordinator Joy Williams, and we are proud that GEAR UP was able to partner with her this year to continue making a difference for our students.

This hands-on experience gave our students a deeper understanding of financial responsibility and the real costs of adulthood. A huge thank you to our amazing community partners for helping prepare our students for success beyond the classroom!

Last week we had a great day visiting the University of the Cumberlands with our freshmen as part of our GEAR UP college tour! 🎓
Students had the opportunity to explore campus, tour several academic buildings, and get a firsthand look at what college life can be like. We visited classrooms, checked out several of the student communal spaces where students study and connect, and even enjoyed lunch together in the campus dining hall.
Experiences like this help students begin to picture their futures and see that college is not just a possibility, it’s a goal within reach. Walking the campus, asking questions, and experiencing the environment helps make those future plans feel real.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to expose our students to different college campuses and help them start thinking about the many paths available after high school. A big thank you to the University of the Cumberlands for welcoming our group today and helping make this experience so meaningful for our students!
