FERN UPDATE - Fern is currently stable, and the plan is for her to undergo a laparotomy tomorrow in hopes of removing the metal objects from her stomach/digestive tract. Her bloodwork today showed extremely high lead levels, along with a very elevated white blood cell count, indicating significant inflammation and infection concerns.
We are still awaiting her zinc bloodwork results as well. Due to the severe level of metal toxicity, Fern will also require chelation therapy, as she has already begun showing some neurological symptoms related to the poisoning.
The veterinary team also performed additional X-rays to better pinpoint the location of the metal objects. The objects appear to be located in part of her digestive system called the ventriculus.
Right now, we are praying with everything we have that the laparotomy is successful.
If the procedure is not successful, the next step would be immediate surgical removal in that area. Unfortunately, the prognosis becomes much more serious at that point. Surgery in this part of a duck’s digestive system involves a great deal of muscle tissue, which does not heal well and can lead to severe post-surgical complications and a very grim outlook.
Fern is still just a young, otherwise healthy duck. She turns one year old later this month, and we want nothing more than for her to have the long, happy, healthy life she deserves.
Fern’s emergency care has already surpassed $3,000, and tomorrow’s procedure, hospitalization, and ongoing treatment will continue to add significantly more. If anyone would like to help support Fern’s care, donations of any amount mean more than we can express and directly help us continue fighting for her.
Thank you all so much for the love, donations, shares, and support you’ve shown Fern during this emergency. It truly means the world to us.
