The interior of Fort Micanopy (facing northeast). By this time (1837) army officers stationed in Florida had learned how to keep their living quarters as cool as possible. And so they had their quarters elevated off the ground and covered to shade themselves from the sun. Tents also assured individual privacy and were preferred to traditional barracks which tended to be warm and stuffy. Officers also had a better view of the large supply buildings and could monitor the constant flow of munitions and other valuable supplies at this depot/fort.
