Empowering all children and youth in Overtown to reach their full potential through education, leadership, and community support.

In 2012, the Overtown Children and Youth Coalition (OC*C) was formed by the anchoring community-based nonprofit organizations in the Overtown Community: Urgent, Inc., Overtown Youth Center, Touching Miami with Love, Lotus House, and Dress for Success with the support of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency and City of Miami District 5 City Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jo

nes. Within months, additional stakeholders joined and worked together under the umbrella of Overtown Children and Youth Coalition. The groundbreaking step towards addressing the needs of Overtown’s children and families with a collective impact and systems-level approach instead of a service-based structure with needs addressed in siloes was well-received by the community. OC*C continues to serve as the backbone organization to support anchoring community-based organizations to empower Overtown as a community where all children and youth reach their full potential.

What happens when a community stops asking what’s possible and starts building it? 🧡 This summer, OC*C had the honor of welcoming the William Julius Wilson Institute National Impact Team at Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) to Overtown for a powerful day of learning, listening, and imagining what comes next for our children and families.

The vision is BIG: creating a connected cradle-to-career pathway that gives our young people the resources, opportunities, education, and support they need to achieve social and economic mobility and Overtown is already showing what’s possible. As you’ll hear throughout this recap: Overtown is on the right path. The work happening here has the potential not only to transform our community, but to become a model for what is possible across Miami-Dade and beyond.

A safer community starts with an informed and connected community. 💙 Join us on Friday, August 21st for a Safety & Community Meeting at Gibson Park, bringing Overtown residents, community partners, and law enforcement together for an important evening of conversation, resources, and information.

We’ll be talking about:
• School safety and what parents should know
• Victims’ advocate resources
• Social media and knowing the law
• Safety updates from the City of Miami Police Department
• Overtown’s history and the importance of knowing the community we call home

This is an opportunity to ask questions, learn about available resources, stay informed, and be part of the conversations that help strengthen our neighborhood.

Another Collective Impact Workshop: Overtown Series is in the books, and this month’s conversation was a reminder that no two organizations, leaders, or community members have to bring the same thing to the work. In fact, that’s the point.

As our Executive Director Anthony Robinson shared, each of us has individual strengths and there is power in taking the time to understand those strengths, build relationships, and recognize how they can work together toward something greater.

That’s the kind of community we’re continuing to build in Overtown: one where organizations know one another, resources are connected, and our collective strengths translate into more tools, opportunities, and support for our young people.

We’re excited about our partners. We’re excited about the work happening now. And we’re even more excited about what’s ahead for Overtown. 💛

History doesn’t erase itself. It gets erased when no one speaks up. Historic preservation isn’t only about protecting buildings or collecting artifacts. It’s about making sure the truth is told—especially when it’s overlooked.

As Keith Ivory, Historic Preservationist, lecturer, and tour guide, reminds us, Overtown isn’t just part of Miami’s history. It is central to it. Without the Black men who voted to incorporate the City of Miami on July 28, 1896, the city we know today may have looked very different.

Yet too often, Overtown’s role in that story is left out. That’s why preservation requires more than remembrance—it requires advocacy. It means speaking up when history is incomplete, correcting the record when voices are missing, and ensuring future generations inherit the full story.

A historic building isn’t truly preserved until the community walks back through its doors. For years, the Historic Lyric Theater stood as a reminder of what once was. Today, it’s once again filled with music, laughter, celebrations, and the people who have always called Overtown home.

As Kamilla Pritchett, President & CEO of the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, shares, one of the most meaningful moments isn’t simply restoring a historic landmark—it’s watching longtime Overtown residents become part of its next chapter.

That’s what preservation looks like.
Not just protecting buildings.
But creating spaces where history continues to live, where new memories are made, and where the community sees itself reflected.

Because preserving history isn’t about standing still.
It’s about making sure our stories continue. 🧡 Historic preservation is most powerful when the people who built the legacy are still part of its future.

“If you don’t preserve the memory, then a culture is extinct.” — Marvin Dunn

As one of Florida’s most respected historians, authors, and educators, Dr. Dunn has spent decades ensuring that the stories of Black communities, including Historic Overtown, are documented, protected, and passed on to future generations. His work reminds us that history isn’t just something we remember, it’s something we choose to preserve.

Historic preservation is about more than protecting places. At OC*C, we believe preserving Overtown’s history is about protecting people, stories, and the legacy of those who came before us. It’s about making sure future generations know whose shoulders they stand on and understand the resilience, sacrifice, and triumph that helped shape our communities.

📚🚂 One last stop. Countless stories. Our final OVRTWN Reading Train stop at YWCA South Florida was the perfect way to wrap up a month filled with imagination, laughter, learning, and community.

Throughout July, children gathered each week to discover new stories, ask big questions, and build a love for reading that extends far beyond the classroom. Every page turned, every smile shared, and every book taken home is another step toward a brighter future.
