Overtown CYC

Overtown CYC Empowering all children and youth in Overtown to reach their full potential through education, leadership, and community support.

In 2012, the Overtown Children and Youth Coalition (OC*C) was formed by the anchoring community-based nonprofit organizations in the Overtown Community: Urgent, Inc., Overtown Youth Center, Touching Miami with Love, Lotus House, and Dress for Success with the support of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency and City of Miami District 5 City Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jo

nes. Within months, additional stakeholders joined and worked together under the umbrella of Overtown Children and Youth Coalition. The groundbreaking step towards addressing the needs of Overtown’s children and families with a collective impact and systems-level approach instead of a service-based structure with needs addressed in siloes was well-received by the community. OC*C continues to serve as the backbone organization to support anchoring community-based organizations to empower Overtown as a community where all children and youth reach their full potential.

OC*C was proud to support our partner organization, Future Leaders in Hospitality, Art & Tourism .flhat , led by , as they hosted their Senior & Honor Student Brunch at .shs .

The event brought together students, educators, and community leaders to celebrate academic achievement while providing valuable guidance for the journey ahead. A special thank you to MBA Care Project Consultant Ron Butler, who shared practical insights on navigating senior year, preparing for important milestones, pursuing scholarship opportunities, and approaching the college process with confidence.

Moments like these remind us that student success is about more than reaching graduation. It’s about ensuring young people have the tools, resources, and support systems they need to thrive long after they leave the classroom.

Congratulations to all of the seniors and honor students recognized. Your future is bright, and we’re excited to see what’s next.

Community impact grows when we learn from one another.

Our Executive Director, , recently joined leaders, advocates, and organizations from across the country at the Black Maternal Health Week Block Party, where conversations around birth justice, maternal health, family wellness, and community care took center stage.

As OC*C continues its work as a backbone organization for Overtown, opportunities like these help us strengthen partnerships, expand resources, and connect with organizations whose missions align with our vision for children and families.

What stood out most was seeing firsthand that this work is part of a much larger movement. Across the country, communities are coming together to ensure mothers, children, and families have access to the support systems, services, and opportunities they deserve.

Through partnerships with Southern Birth Justice Network and the Mobile Midwife Clinic initiative, we remain committed to advancing maternal health, increasing access to care, and strengthening outcomes for families throughout Overtown.

Because when mothers are supported, families are stronger. When families are stronger, communities thrive. And it truly takes a village.

Care becomes more powerful when it meets people where they are.

Earlier this month, families joined us at OC*C for one of the first stops of the Mobile Midwife Clinic, a community-centered initiative designed to expand access to maternal health resources, wellness support, education, and care.

Through this partnership with and community health partners, women and families are able to access trusted services in familiar spaces right here in the community.

And we’re just getting started.

The Mobile Midwife Clinic returns to the beginning this Thursday, June 4th from 10 AM–2 PM, offering free and low-cost support including wellness checks, prenatal and postpartum resources, family planning education, birth planning, and more.

Because healthy families help build healthy communities.

Some of the most important leaders in our community never hold elected office.

They are the fathers, father figures, mentors, educators, coaches, and community champions who show up every day, often without recognition, helping shape the next generation through their presence, guidance, and example.

Join us for Brunch with Kings: Celebrating Fathers & Scholars, an afternoon dedicated to honoring the men and graduating scholars whose leadership, resilience, sacrifice, and commitment continue to make a lasting impact in our families, schools, and communities.

Together, we’ll celebrate achievement, recognize excellence, share meaningful conversations, and honor the legacy being built by those who lead with purpose.

What happens when organizations, funders, and community leaders come together with a shared commitment to children and families? Real conversations. Real alignment. Real momentum.

We were honored to welcome , our partners and leaders to for an exchange centered on collaboration, collective impact, and strengthening the cradle-to-career pipeline for our community. From education and mentorship to wellness, workforce development, and opportunity, every conversation reinforced the importance of building systems that support young people at every stage of their journey.

This work is bigger than any one organization. It takes partnership, shared vision, and a long-term commitment to creating stronger pathways for the next generation and we’re proud to continue building alongside those who believe in the future of Overtown.

At OC*C, we believe literacy is more than reading, it’s confidence, imagination, exposure, and one of the many building blocks within the cradle-to-career pipeline we work every day to strengthen for Overtown children and families.

Last week at Overtown Reads at YWCA South Florida , our youngest community members showed up with joy, curiosity, and crowns on their heads, reminding us exactly why this work matters. Through storytelling, creativity, and connection, children were given space to learn, dream, and feel celebrated in an environment rooted in community and opportunity. 👑✨ A special thank you to our guest reader Sara from Culmer/Overtown Branch Library, Early Learning Coalition of Miami Dade for providing crowns, The Children's Trust for providing books, and Armstrong Creative Consulting for supporting supply coordination!

As the backbone organization supporting collaboration across Overtown, OC*C remains committed to creating experiences that empower youth at every stage of their journey because when we invest in literacy, we invest in possibility.

History lives through the stories we preserve, the conversations we continue, and the communities committed to protecting its legacy.

OC*C is proud to support Voices From the Historic Hampton House, an evening bringing together leaders, advocates, creatives, and community voices to reflect on the cultural and historical significance of one of Miami’s most important landmarks.

The represents more than a place, it represents resilience, leadership, Black excellence, and the power of community during pivotal moments in the Civil Rights Movement. Events like this create space to honor that legacy while continuing important conversations around preservation, culture, storytelling, and collective progress.

We are honored to stand alongside an incredible group of speakers, partners, and organizations committed to uplifting our history and investing in the future of our communities.

Special thanks to , , , and everyone helping bring this important conversation to life.

Some of the most powerful moments at IATBOML 2026 weren’t performances. They were honest conversations like this one.

Thank you, , for showing our youth what resilience, perseverance, and growth can really look like.
