Happy birthday to Barry Manilow! Though famous for his pop songs, Manilow also wrote commercial jingles for various companies, such as State Farm insurance and McDonald's, as shown in this April 1974 interview with WTVJ's Martha Teichner.

Happy birthday to Jacksonville, Florida! The city was founded on this day in 1822 and named after Andrew Jackson, future president and face on the $20 bill. Before that, the area was known as Cow Ford (or "Cowford"). In this film footage from 1926, Jacksonville was touted as a playground for "grownup children," with beachside swimming pools ("casinos"), a pier featuring various amusements, and driveable sand.

Are you ready for some football?! When we say football we now mean soccer. The FIFA World Cup hits the U.S. at various stadiums around the country from now through the finals in mid-July. In 1973, Miami's soccer team was the Toros and Mike Seerey was one of their strongest players. In this WTVJ sports interview, Seerey talked about the growth of soccer in the U.S. The game has grown a lot over the years and we can definitely say that Miami has responded to this growth pretty well.

For Wayback Wednesday, we're going back to 1971 when roller skating (on quads!) was a popular outdoor activity at this Miami park, at least on this day. Were you a skating enthusiast who could freestyle a lap or two around the rink without falling? Did you boogie on wheels during the disco era? The young people in this WTVJ newsfilm footage seem to be enjoying themselves, maybe because this footage was filmed on Christmas Day and not during the scorching summer.

The next big artifact documenting South Florida’s past probably isn’t behind glass, it’s likely forgotten, collecting dust. Wherever it is, whatever it is, the team at Wolfson Archives wants to find it — preserving history while adding to it.
