Sponsor-A-Scholar will provide newly arrived and former ESOL students with financial aid for tuition and books. Students will be USA immigration status holding residents and/or be in the process of obtaining the residency of the State of Florida. Newly arrived college/university age students have a difficult time meeting the Florida residency requirements in order to pay state tuition in public co
lleges and universities. Many of these students must wait anywhere between one and three years before they can begin to study at a public university because of residency requirements. Funding for the foundation will be used to cover tuition and books for these students and will be provided until they are able to obtain a federal, state or private scholarship that will cover the expenses for the remainder of their college/university schooling. Students will receive help applying for other federal, state and private scholarships once they have established residency in the State of Florida. Sponsor-A-Scholar will also collect funding to help low income students to buy ESOL books in a timely manner in order to fulfill their obligations in the classroom. Students will self-identify as low income and would provide required paperwork Sponsor-A-Scholar is financial aid advisor in to determine eligibility. Funding collected by Sponsor-A-Scholar shall also be provided to cover tuition and books for women who lack the necessary documentation to establish residency in the State of Florida on their own. Married women have a particularly difficult time establishing residency of the State of Florida for the purpose of obtaining in-state-tuition because all documents are in their husbands’ names. These monies will be provided for a year while they obtain the necessary documents that will make them legal residents of the State of Florida. They will be provided with advice and information on how to obtain the necessary documentation to become residents of the State of Florida. They will then be helped to apply for other available federal, state and private scholarships.
