Miami Lighthouse for the Blind From their efforts the Florida Association of Workers for the Blind, which would later be called Miami Lighthouse, was born.

Through education, training, research and vision enhancement, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides hope, confidence, and independence to people of all ages. 💙 History of Miami Lighthouse

In the late 1920s blind activist Dolly Gamble enlisted the Miami Lions and Miami Rotary clubs to help the blind attain independence. Today we are Florida's largest and oldest nonprofit serving the needs of the blind and visually impaired. Through education, training, research and vision enhancement, Miami Lighthouse is a center for learning that provides hope, confidence, and independence to people of all ages, transforming the lives of over 90,000 blind and visually impaired people annually, from babies to seniors, and their families. Our programs’ impact is statewide, national, and international. The Florida Heiken Children's Vision Program, cited by the American Optometric Association as a national model other states should adopt, provides comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses for underserved schoolchildren throughout Florida using our fleet of five mobile eye care units. Our Lighthouse Learning Center’s innovative programs, such as our internationally recognized inclusion pre-kindergarten – from which we are developing a certificate program with a sister institution in Israel, new kindergarten, first grade and mothers’ play days for their blind toddlers, make a difference in the lives of children and their families. Yesterday, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind community gathered at the Coral Gables Museum to celebrate World Sight Day for our 'America Touched, America Seen' exhibition reception, made possible with support from Florida Division of Arts and Culture, State of Florida, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

We thank everyone who joined us in the Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery to marvel at the incredible artworks created under the instruction of resident artist Aaron Hill by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind adult and Academy artists. Guests enjoyed the talented Miami Lighthouse United Voices Choir and the incredible sounds of Miami Lighthouse musicians.

We extend an extra special thank you to Christine Stiefel from The Wildflower Foundation, for her ongoing support for her Wildflower Foundation Matching Challenge supporting Art and Music for Adults and Children, matching every new donation made to Miami Lighthouse music and arts programs. Happy World Sight Day! 👁️ Today, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind joined community leaders to honor our partner organization, the Florida Division of Blind Services, celebrating “85 Years of Impact”!

The Florida Division of Blind Services, established in 1941, has a longstanding mission of empowering individuals who are blind or visually impaired, providing a comprehensive network of programs and services that promote independence, education, employment, and community participation for blind and visually impaired Floridians of all ages.

The Florida Division of Blind Services supports Miami Lighthouse for the Blind programs such as our Independent Living and Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Services for adults, Pre-Employment Transition Services for young adults and teens, as well as our Music and arts programs for children and teens.

Together, we prove it’s possible to see without sight!™ 💙

The World Sight Day reception is tonight, inside the Anthony R. Abraham Gallery at the Coral Gables Museum, showcasing the work of blind and visually impaired artists of all ages, with live music by our very own Miami Lighthouse musicians.
