Young Musicians Unite

Young Musicians Unite Young Musicians Unite believes that every student in Miami-Dade deserves access to music education.

Mission:
Young Musicians Unite is a nonprofit that believes that every student in Miami-Dade County deserves access to music education regardless of their socio-economic background. We collaborate with schools to provide free music education which has been proven to inspire personal development, foster a sense of community and prepare our future leaders. What We Do:
To empower youth, YMU provides

turnkey music solutions for schools across Miami-Dade County. YMU equips schools with trained instructors, lesson plans, instruments, and all the necessary resources for a vibrant music education. By leveraging its 9 year experience of creating successful music programs, YMU ensures a seamless experience for both students and schools. The result is not just smooth communication and consistency within the music program, but also the support and oversight for teachers that eliminates teacher turnover and burnout and creates a school culture that prioritizes creative expression. This holistic approach helps schools attract and retain students, their talents, interest, and engagement. Young Musicians Unite is actively providing music programming for over 3,000 students in 35 schools this 2021/2022 school year. We engage student musicians through diverse, relatable music programs including Jazz Bands, Rock Ensembles, Music Technology, Modern Band, Beginning Band, Strings, and Drumline.

One drum. That was it.

Our students start as kids who got handed an instrument by a teacher who believed them to become musicians. The stage is what happens next: the crowd, the nerves, the moment they find out what they can actually do.

This is what our programs do, in 106 public schools across Miami-Dade. Not just music class. Confidence a kid carries into everything else.

That is what YMU builds.

Before the students came back, the teachers went first.

This summer, YMU Academy brought every Teaching Artist together for classroom simulations, one-on-one coaching, and a shared standard for how we teach. When we invest in our teachers, every classroom gets better.

Also in the August newsletter:
sfl released their debut single "Closed Eyes," recorded and mixed at YMU Studio. "It's about someone who can't hear you," the band said of the track.

launched its first case study, "A Diamond in the Rough," on Leisure City K-8 Center . Authored by Dr. Andrea Botero, with a mini documentary and a two-page summary of the findings.

awarded YMU a two-year grant of cash and instruments, sustaining music instruction at Young Men's Preparatory Academy, where YMU reaches 96 of the school's 127 students.

Ten days. One concert. And a room full of people finding out what this job actually asks of them. ๐ŸŽบ

We spent July 20โ€“31 with our teachers โ€” every YMU region in one room โ€” and week one was the part nobody posts about. Code Red drills. Lockdown procedure. Mandatory reporting. Harassment prevention. Classroom management. Hours of it โ€” because a room has to be safe before it can ever be fun.

Then week two, the students showed up. ๐Ÿฅ

You could feel it change. Real kids, real noise, real off-days โ€” and everything from week one had about four seconds to become instinct.

And then there were the conversations in between. Some of the best hours of the two weeks were the ones where the room just talked โ€” about what makes a practice session actually work, how you teach feel and not only notes, and what each of us wished someone had told us at fifteen.

And on the last day, everybody played.

If you can hold a room and teach a kid to love music, we'll handle the rest โ€” exactly like this. ๐ŸŽถ

This week, YMU won. A lot. ๐ŸŽถ

Monkey Business's "Tale of Two" is smashing every number before it, 200,000 streams and counting. The 13th Annual Gala made it into Aventura Magazine's July issue. Our CEO Sammy Gonzalez Zeira sat down with the Crunchy Mama Box podcast to talk startup grit in social impact. Sol took first place in Elevated Tracks 305 for "Miami On My Tongue," got covered by Fame Magazine and Florida News Blitz, dropped the music video, then performed it live at the FIFA Fan Fest. Kaylin's "devil's den" hit 3,000 streams. Nina Marie's "Perfect Idea (Bad Ex*****on)" crossed 10,000.

Same mission, different stage every week. Swipe through, then go stream it.

The wait is over. ๐ŸŽธ Say hello to LunAzul, the duo of Stella Rodriguez and Micaela Godoy, alumni who cut their teeth together in the Miami Beach Rock Ensemble and are now studying at The New School's School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. Their debut YMU Live session captures exactly what happens when two Miami-raised musicians never stop playing together. Watch the full session in our YouTube channel.

Okay, "during" is doing some heavy lifting. But on June 30th, a band called Undercover really did play the FIFA Fan Festival at Bayfront Park in Miami.

Look closer at that stage. Every musician on it grew up inside YMU, and some have been in this circle for more than 10 years.

Estelle Morales, our Shows Manager, came up singing in Avalanche, Miami Beach Rock Ensemble and 4Tune. Theo Braun, our Technical Director, runs sound, lights and crew for our whole season. Deo Budnevich went from Rock Ensemble to the cover of YMU Magazine. Harry Schwartz has been on our shows team since we met him at 13. And AJ Hill, saxophonist of Spam Allstars, now directs the Miami Beach Rock Ensemble.

They started as kids in a band room. They never really left. That's the whole point of YMU. Not a program you age out of, but a community you grow up inside, and living proof that a real career in music is possible.

The World Cup Final is today. These players have been building toward their stage for years too.
Tag someone who grew up in a band room. ๐ŸŽถ

Olvidarme, the new single by is out on all platforms!

Isabella is a shining light in our studio and bands, and her new song sees her taking new directions, and giving self love a priority always.
