Earlier this week, NCOBS wrapped up our final pin ceremony of the summer with one of our longest-standing partners, Episcopal Academy. On Monday, more than 130 students across twelve crews accepted their Outward Bound pin, taking time to acknowledge and celebrate all they had accomplished on course.

The Compass Rose pin is more than a keepsake. It represents a longstanding tradition and the personal commitment to carry the lessons of Outward Bound forward and continue striving toward qualities like self-reliance, leadership, compassion, moral courage, and service.

At the end of every course, the pin ceremony offers a chance to pause and reflect on how far students have come, the challenges they've faced, and the growth they've experienced along the way. As these students head home, we hope they'll wear their pins with pride and remember that the journey doesn't end here.

Meet Tom Clement, Cedar Rock Resident Course Director and one of our 2026 Buckley Bearing Award recipients! 💫

Over the past six seasons, Tom has been a steady presence within the NCOBS community, supporting both students and staff with dedication, passion, and care. An Outward Bound alum himself, Tom first discovered the power of outdoor education as a student and has since dedicated his career to creating meaningful experiences for others. Whether supporting programs from basecamp, mentoring staff, or helping students grow through challenge, Tom brings a deep commitment to the people at the heart of our mission.

🚲 When he's not at Cedar Rock, you can find Tom backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, boating, or diving into a good book. 📖

Congratulations, Tom, and thank you for all that you do for the NCOBS community! 👏

As hard as we may try, it's tough to capture the magnitude of Patagonia's beauty in just a few photos. The feeling of being there, surrounded by mountains and sharing the experience with a crew, is something a camera can never quite convey.

Some things you just have to experience for yourself. 🏔️ 🧭

"In my two weeks of service and backpacking on the Patagonia steppes, I have learned many valuable lessons. I have learned how to work a camp stove, compress the gear in my pack, and to help my crew navigate our way safely up numerous summits. More important, however, are the other life skills I have gained on this journey. I have learned to create an environment full of teamwork, mutual respect, and trust." -Becca, Patagonia Backpacking & Service Alum
