JUNETEENTH: FREEDOM CHANGED THE ECONOMY

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865—the day freedom was finally announced to enslaved African Americans in Texas.

The end of slavery was not only a moral and human rights victory; it marked a major economic shift. For generations, enslaved labor fueled industries, generated wealth, and supported a system that treated people as property rather than participants in the economy.

Emancipation transformed that reality. Freedom created opportunities for African Americans to earn wages, own businesses, acquire property, pursue education, and begin building generational wealth.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is more than the absence of bondage—it is the presence of opportunity, dignity, and the ability to determine one’s own future.

As we honor the resilience and sacrifices of those who came before us, we also recognize that the pursuit of economic empowerment remains an important part of the Juneteenth legacy.
