Every August, the same thing happens in every house with kids in it.

New sneakers come in. The old ones don't go anywhere. They get pushed to the back of the closet because they are outgrown or out of style but still perfectly wearable.

This year, instead of pushing footwear to the back of the closet, pack them up and send them to us to be cleaned and renewed so they can enter the second-hand circular economy.

Make it a PTA project and collect as many as you can to show students that something as simple as collecting footwear can lead to an incredible environmental impact.

Just one pair of sneakers sent in to be cleaned up and recirculated averts 30 pounds of CO2e from the atmosphere and saves 2,257 gallons of water (what it takes to manufacture a brand new pair of sneakers)!

Most corporate and community shoe drives don't stall because nobody wants to help. They stall because the collection bin never lands anywhere — it stays in a trunk, or by the door at home, or in someone's office and the shoe pile never builds.

The fix is picking one spot where people already pass through, and leaving it there for a few days or weeks!

A running store, where runners cycle through shoes constantly. A gym, where members replace trainers every few months. A salon, where regulars come back every few weeks. A community race, where hundreds of runners show up at once.

School front offices, break rooms, church lobbies, and dugouts all work too.

Somewhere in June, a kid outgrew their sneakers. A runner retired a pair of trainers. Somebody finally cleaned out the shoes in the back of the closet.

Added together, that became 74,526 pairs kept out of landfills, 2,235,780 pounds of CO₂e averted, and 168,205,182 gallons of water saved.
