Are you a medical student, resident, or research fellow ready to share your work, showcase your ideas, and make an impact on the future of medicine? This is your opportunity to present your research!

The Miami-Dade County Medical Association (MDCMA) invites you to submit your abstracts for the 8th Annual Miami-Dade and Broward Medical Research Competition, taking place on March 6, 2027.

What can you submit?

▪️ Quality improvement initiatives
▪️ Advocacy projects

Finalists will present their research or clinical case reports before a panel of judges, gaining visibility for their work and contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge across our local and state medical communities.

It was a great morning for Dr. Adriana Bonansea Frances, immediate past president of the -Dade County Medical Association to engage with Florida’s state legislators at another incredible networking breakfast.

We were pleased to connect with State Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez, Chair of the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation, and State Senator Alexis Calatayud, representing District 38. The Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation represents Florida’s largest and most populous county as a unified voting bloc in the state legislature.

A special thank you to Miami's Community Newspapers for hosting these breakfasts, which have become a signature gathering in South Miami, bringing together leaders from across business, government and the community for meaningful conversations and connections. We are proud to announce that Julie Rosenberg Kantor, M.D., F.A.A.P., president of the Miami-Dade County Medical Association (MDCMA) and attending physician at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, has been appointed as a member at-large of The Children's Trust of Miami-Dade County Board of Directors.

This appointment is important for our community. Dr. Kantor brings close to three decades of pediatric experience, along with her expertise in medical education, mentorship and community leadership, to an organization that helps shape strategic investments and initiatives for children and families across Miami-Dade County.

Her voice will help strengthen the connection between health, education and the well-being of children and families, and ensure that the perspective of pediatric medicine is part of important community decisions.

Great morning at “FIU on the Rise,” a powerful breakfast conversation about what’s next for Florida International University (FIU), on campus, in athletics, and throughout our community.

FIU President Jeanette Nunez highlighted the institution’s remarkable momentum, including its recognition among the nation’s Top 50 public universities, Top 23 colleges and universities, and No. 1 in economic and social mobility. She also shared FIU’s plans to become the first university in Florida to acquire a full-stack trapped-ion quantum computer, bringing an industry-leading research tool to the state.

Members of the Miami-Dade County Medical Association (MDCMA) were thrilled to be part of the conversation, including MDCMA president Julie Rosenberg Kantor, MD, who has been teaching at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine for more than a decade; Vice President Dr. Jorge Marcos, who has mentored FIU students for decades; and Immediate Past President Dr. Adriana Bonansea Frances.

From groundbreaking research and innovation to building affinity and community through winning athletic programs, FIU continues to demonstrate what is possible when education, research, athletics, and community come together.

The Miami-Dade County Medical Association (MDCMA) hosted its inaugural Physician Wellness Summit on September 27 at Life Time Fitness Miami at The Falls. The summit centered on four interconnected pillars of physician wellness: physical, nutritional, mental, and financial health.

Designed specifically for physicians, the event provided an opportunity to step away from the demands of medicine and make time for something that is often overlooked: taking care of themselves. Through a combination of education, movement, discussion, and reflection, participants were encouraged to explore practical ways to support their well-being both personally and professionally.

MDCMA President Julie Kantor, MD, F.A.A.P., emphasized that wellness is an important part of building sustainable and fulfilling careers. The afternoon featured a variety of interactive sessions, including a General Wellness Session and stretching a GTX Group Fitness Experience. The program concluded with The Physician Pause: Stretch + Balance + Meditation, a time to slow down, recharge, and reconnect.

Participants also explored "Practical Nutrition for Aging, Muscle and Gut Health" with Michelle Pearlman, M.D., Financial Wellness with Cesar Murillo, CIMA, of Emergent Global Investments, followed by a Physician Wellness discussion led by Juan Oms, M.D., F.A.P.A.

Miami-Dade County Medical Association president, Julie Rosenberg Kantor, MD; Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) president, Alfred Sanchez; and Nicklaus Children's Hospital Senior VP, Chief Physician Executive and Chief Clinical Officer Marcos Mestre, MD, celebrated among representatives of some of the most relevant organizations in Miami-Dade County.

The Miami-Dade County Medical Association (MDCMA) recently brought together physician leaders from major South Florida healthcare institutions and hospital medical staffs for a dinner focused on shared priorities, advocacy, and opportunities for greater collaboration.

Guests included Steven Henriques, M.D. from HCA; Rafael Fernandez, M.D., Brenda Gonzalez, M.D., and Jason James MD, from Baptist Health; Leopoldo Malvezzi, M.D. and Jacques Orces, D.O. from Nicklaus Children's Hospital; and Marie Anne Sosa, M.D. from the University of Miami Health System.

MDCMA President Julie Rosenberg Kantor, MD, President-Elect Damaris Mafut D.O., and Secretary/Treasurer Juan Diego Oms, M.D., shared the association’s vision for strengthening collaboration among physicians, medical staffs, healthcare institutions, and the broader medical community.

Discussion included healthcare advocacy and shared legislative priorities, including reimbursement, prior authorization and insurer practices, medical liability, healthcare workforce and affordability, hospital funding, and scope of practice.

The evening reinforced the value of bringing physician leaders together to identify common concerns, strengthen relationships, and help shape MDCMA’s advocacy agenda on behalf of physicians and patients across South Florida.

We look forward to continuing the conversation and turning shared priorities into meaningful collaboration.
