Miami-Dade residents, nonprofits sound off on nearly $13 billion budget proposal

Nonprofits plead for support

Groups like Curley’s House Food Bank told commissioners their programs are at risk if funding is cut.

“We’re here to basically get our funds restored,” a representative said, noting that the Liberty City nonprofit has provided food assistance since 1999.

The organization serves more than 5,000 people a month, including seniors and disabled veterans, with fresh produce and other essentials.

Urban Health Partnership also pleaded with leaders to reconsider.

A marathon meeting at the Miami-Dade County Commission drew nearly 200 speakers Thursday night, as residents and nonprofit leaders voiced concerns about a proposed nearly $13 billion budget.

Dear Church Families:

Thank you so much for all of your help over the years; we truly appreciate it. We are very grateful for your generosity, and we find it especially lovely to receive donations at the right time. May you and your family always experience the love and blessings of God. Please get in contact with us whenever we can be of help.

Nevertheless, we're writing to ask for the church's help in raising money to buy bulk food because of financial constraints. In order to get back on track with our ministry feeding the homeless, elderly, veterans, single moms, children, and several starving and afflicted groups inside our worthy inner-city areas, our organization needs immediate and urgent help to raise $50,000.00 to $75,000.00 due to budget shortfalls.

This would allow us to pay for the operational and administrative costs needed to run boots-on-the-ground organizations that have been feeding our impacted Liberty City inner-city communities for over 30 years.

In addition, we are looking for sponsors for two events in the months of June and July 2024. We will be having a Father's Day program on June 14, 2024, and then we want to have a back-to-school book bag give-away on July 26, 2024. We pray for your continued support in assisting us with these worthy community events as well.

These activities are intended for low- to moderate-income participants who lack the necessary funds or resources. We truly need the church's help meeting our bulk food and operational goals during budget shortfalls.

We thank you for your time and attention. For more information, please contact Falicia Douglas, Senior Program Director, at your earliest convenience at 305-759-9805 or via email at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Lavern Spicer, Executive Director/Founder
