MHB - Men Having Babies Supporting current / future gay parents and surrogates with 6 annual conferences worldwide & financial support through the Gay Parenting Assistance Program

This is an online forum for for people who were touched by, and benefited from gay surrogacy arrangements -- including gay dads and their families, surrogates and their family members, egg donors, and the professionals who help facilitate the process. The forum is managed by Men Having Babies (MHB), and the initial group of bloggers come from our network. MHB offers guidance and financial assistance for gay men who want to become fathers through surrogacy. The organization organizes seminars, exhibits and workshops for parents and prospective parents in NY and other locations worldwide, and provides financial assistance and extensive online resources. Given our core values and mission, here are some issues we will pay attention to:
- Financial: while this may be a growing practice, surrogacy is still very expensive and financially out of reach for many. We feel this should be not just noted, but also combated (which the organization does through financial assistance and other means).
- Relationships: we believe surrogacy arrangement are more successful when attention is given to the meaningful relationships they can bring about.
- Well being of all parties: we believe that attention should be given to the way surrogacy arrangements should minimize the risks and maximize the potential short and long term benefits to all involved- including the surrogate and donor, their families, the prospective parents and the future children.

We just wrapped up our annual Midwest conference, and for the first time it was an expanded, three-day event! It was amazing to meet so many intended parents in person, the next generation of gay dads, and to talk about ethical surrogacy as they take their first steptoward parenthood.

As gay men and human rights advocates, it matters deeply to us that the women who help us grow our families are treated with the utmost care and respect. We call it Ethical Surrogacy.

Following ethical guidelines that protect surrogates, egg donors, and intended parents is essential. We want to be proud of how our kids came into the world: through kindness, friendship, and love. And we want EVERYONE involved in giving our children life to come out of the experience happy and well.

At the Men Having Babies* Midwest Surrogacy Conference & Expo in Chicago, October 16–18 at the Center on Halsted, we’ll talk about what ethical surrogacy looks like and how to make sure your journey follows it. Surrogacy for gay men: How much does it cost?

The financial side is probably the biggest obstacle for gay men who want to have a baby.

At our upcoming Midwest Surrogacy Conference & Expo in Chicago, we’ll dedicate a whole session to helping you figure out how to budget for the process before you decide to embark on your journey.

We’ll take a closer look at overall surrogacy costs, including surrogate compensation packages and medical insurance. We’ll also cover IVF and surrogacy coverage through your workplace or health insurance, including how to benefit from Illinois’s new IVF benefits for gay men.

Surrogacy involves a lot of paperwork, but at its core it's a medical process. That's why many of the most important choices you'll make along the way are medical ones.

For gay men, the path to biological fatherhood starts with research. Before you decide whether surrogacy is right for your family, there are three things you'll want to understand:

1️⃣ The basics: key terms, the different types of surrogacy, and the parts of a typical arrangement

2️⃣ The roadmap: the usual sequence and timeline, including the big decisions that will shape your journey

3️⃣ Your fit: how your family vision, budget, and comfort with risk all come together

Meet single dad, Rick, who will speak in the Single Fathers Workshop at the Men Having Babies conference in Chicago on October 16-18.

Rick started his journey at the MHB conference in Chicago in 2022. Following a long road that included four failed transfers and a switch in surrogates, he says persistence and stubbornness, along with support from family and friends, helped him get through the hardship. "Learn the process of the journey inside and out so you can advocate for yourself to your providers," he says.

Despite the weather, we were thrilled to see a full house again this weekend. Dozens of dads-to-be joined us to learn about their surrogacy options, explore what ethical surrogacy looks like, and clear up the myths, misconceptions, and horror stories that too often shape how surrogacy is portrayed in the media.

We were proud to show you the responsible, ethical side of surrogacy, and we're confident that the future dads we met this weekend will go on to build wonderful, loving families.
