This is the last weekend to view BookBound: The Art of Books and Printmaking, at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. On the wall and in a vitrine, you can find some archival material from Turn-Based Press and the DWNTWN ArtHouse. The show will be up through Sunday, August 21st, 2022.

The "Sounds" poster is a digital print designed by TBP Co-Director Thom Wheeler Castillo which was an advertisement for a live sound event co-presented by the record label "Other Electricities" and the DWNTWN ArtHouse. The other posters on the wall around it are band-poster screenprints by Kristen Thiele.

In the vitrine are a selection of prints and ephemera, including a copy of The Good Inn, signed by Josh Frank, who co-authored the book with Black Francis; TBP hosted the first book reading for the novel in the United States. Lithographs and screenprint reproductions were created by Co-Director Kathleen Hudspeth of illustrations for the book that were originally drawn by illustrator Steven Appleby. Two from that series are in the vitrine, along with one of our prints from our original fundraising edition, and an image of Kathleen printing a split fountain during the "Live Printing with the TM Sisters" event we hosted shortly after first starting to get our space in the DWNTWN ArtHouse operational.

Part of the opening performance at the Paper Weather Workshop yesterday--artist Jessica Higgens interacts with artist Alison Knowles using paper's sound and movement. The two artists, who are also mother and daughter, used paper to create sound on, around, or in relationship to one-another.

This workshop is part of Knowles' week-long residency at Audiotheque this week, and the instruments made at Turn-Based Press yesterday will be used in Knowles and Higgens' performance this Friday night, at 8 PM, as part of the Listening Club series. The paper used in this video was hand-made by artist and papermaker Lisa Haque (Lisa Switalski), who demonstrated various paper-making techniques to and assisted workshop participants.

It was a great Sunday at ArtCenter/ South Florida.

Some of our dear friends of the Sweat Broadside project were in New York recently for an exhibition featuring a selection of the broadsides at The Center for Book Arts; Lea Nickless, Carol Todaro, and Michelle Weinberg discussed the evolution of the project in a related presentation. The show got some attention from Design Arts Daily, and TBP was mentioned.

The entire collection of broadsides is viewable online through the Florida Atlantic University's digital library here: http://tinyurl.com/zzbo2vl

Exciting news for the South Florida printmaking community! Read this interview with recent Knight Arts Challenge awardee and friend of the press, Tom Virgin.

He has complementary words about our local print and book arts community, as well as great plans for the future.

We've had to wrangle with some of the same challenges that Tom will, and we'll support and collaborate with him any way we can. We hope that our audience will lend him their support as well.

In an era of iPads and Kindles, Tom Virgin yearns to return to an analog form of publishing. The founder ...

Our presses took a trip! :P

We'll have more information about that, appreciation for our time at the Downtown Art House, acknowledgement of assistance given us, and thoughts about both our past and future--but not today. TBP staff are seriously in need of some down-time!

Vulture has an interview with Tom Hart, of the Sequential Artist Workshop and the Hutch Owen graphic novel series, about his graphic memoir chronicling the emotional and personal fallout following the unexpected death of his young daughter in 2011.

Turn-Based Press brought Hart to Miami in 2014 to lead our Comic Art Workshop, which was held in conjunction with our comic-art inspired exhibition "Tell It to My Face". Both Hart and his wife, illustrator and graphic novelist Leela Corman, had works in the exhibition. One of Hart's exhibited works was a loving and poignant piece addressing the experience of parental grief.

The exhibition later traveled to the Florida Keys Community College gallery, providing the opportunity for a wider audience to see the show; the exhibition at FKCC was also used as inspiration for student coursework.

Graphic novelist Tom Hart discusses his new book, which details loss in a stunning way.

Archival Feedback, a project by Turn-Based Press Co-Director T Wheeler Castillo and Emile Milgrim, in which they recorded sounds from south Florida and asked sound artists to create aural responses to those sounds, is on Wynwood Radio from now until noon.

They also collaborated on hand-screened prints, slipcovers and a box set for the album--all of which was printed at Turn-Based Press. Link for purchase here:

The latest edition of Art Papers has a commissioned feature by Bethany Collins and Natasha Trethewey. Collins' work is an excerpt from a large series of blind-embosses titled A Pattern or Practice, which she created during the Summer of 2015 at Turn-Based Press, with some technical assistance from TBP Founder and Co-Director Kathleen Hudspeth.

The text in Collins' blind embosses are reproductions of the Department of Justice's report on racist policing and court practices in Ferguson, Missouri.

Collins will have work on view at Art Basel | Miami Beach in the Richard Gray Gallery booth, C3.
