About Us:

The organization’s Founder & Executive Director, Jessica Garrett Modkins, saw the history of a 1949 historic community in Miami, Florida die with the passing of each pioneer; Richmond Heights. Out of the concern of preservation, she and her mother, Patricia Harper Garrett, co-authored a book to preserve the rich legacy of this community. The book is entitled, Images of America: Miami’s

Richmond Heights; published by Arcadia Publishing. As a result of the book, they were afforded many historic documents, photographs, artifacts, and visual stories of the journey. In September of 2013, Jessica decided to form a non-profit organization, which would expand her efforts to preserve this rich history. She wanted to form an organization dedicated to preserving this legacy for generations to come.

Richmond Heights Barbershop 💈 witnessed many of South Florida’s great Black leaders walk through their door. Richmond Heights, a community in southwest Miami, Florida, was founded in 1949 by Capt. Frank Crawford Martin for African American World War II veterans. Captain Martin, also a veteran, thought this community would be a good business venture, but for this white man in the late 1940s it turned into a tool for social change leading all the way to the White House. Miami's Richmond Heights chronicles the beginnings of the original residents who were World War II veterans, including Tuskegee Airmen, as well as Fortune
500 presidents, doctors, university professors, and many other professionals. It explores the vision for the community, how it translated to residents, as well as their descendants today.
