What does it take to transform a city into a global hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment?

At the 2026 Miami Economic Forum, held on February 27, 2026, the Economic Club of Miami was proud to present the inaugural Miami Economic Leadership Award to former Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez in recognition of his leadership during one of the most consequential periods in Miami’s history.

During his eight years as mayor, Miami lowered taxes, reduced homicides to near-historic lows, attracted billions in investment, and emerged as one of the world’s leading destinations for entrepreneurs, technology companies, and global talent.

Following the award presentation, Mayor Suarez joined
Jack Abraham, Founder and Managing Partner of Atomic, for a wide-ranging fireside chat on Miami’s evolution, the future of technology and artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, education, transportation, and what comes next for our city.

Among the topics discussed:
🔵 The story behind the famous “How Can I Help?” tweet that helped ignite Miami’s tech boom
🔵 How Miami attracted innovators, investors, and business leaders from around the world
🔵 Why economic freedom, low taxes, and responsive government matter
🔵 The future of AI, education, and workforce development
🔵 Miami’s potential to become a global center for capital formation, entrepreneurship, and innovation
🔵 Lessons learned from Mayor Suarez’s presidential campaign
🔵 The opportunities and challenges that accompany Miami’s rapid growth

As Mayor Suarez noted during the discussion, Miami’s story is still being written. The question now is not whether Miami has arrived—but how far it can go.

What an incredible evening with Judge Roy Altman at our latest Economic Club of Miami private dinner series.

Judge Altman brought an amazing combination of knowledge, passion, humility, and dynamism to the table. Over nearly three hours, we discussed everything from his family’s immigration from Venezuela to Miami, his journey from becoming a U.S. citizen to eventually becoming the youngest-ever U.S. District Court Judge in South Florida, and his deep appreciation for the opportunity America has provided him.

The centerpiece of the conversation was his new New York Times bestselling book, *Israel on Trial*. But this book is about much more than Israel. It is also a rediscovery of the American legal tradition — a reminder that facts, evidence, and sound methodology matter when evaluating the important issues of our time.

Every guest left with a personally signed copy of the book. But we left with much more than that.

We left with pride in our community.

Judge Altman grew up here in Miami, played high school football here, went on to play football at Columbia University, graduated from Yale Law School, and now serves on the federal bench. His story is a reminder that Miami doesn’t just attract talent — it helps develop it.

As America approaches its 250th birthday, evenings like this remind us that great communities help shape great leaders.

One of our longest-standing members summed it up best:

“Excellent dinner. Judge Altman was impressive. One of the most engaging speakers we have had.”

Thank you, Judge Altman, for an unforgettable evening.

Last month, the Economic Club of Miami welcomed former University of Miami men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga for a powerful conversation on leadership, resilience, teamwork, and overcoming obstacles.

In conversation with Economic Club of Miami Board Member Alex Binelo, Coach Larrañaga reflected on his remarkable journey — from coaching his first team at age 14, to leading both George Mason and the University of Miami to historic Final Four appearances.

The discussion explored the importance of building culture, creating a clear vision, maintaining discipline, and leading through change — lessons that apply far beyond basketball.

We were grateful to have Coach Larrañaga share his insights with our members and guests, and to Alex Binelo for guiding such a thoughtful conversation.

What does it take to build a winning culture—and sustain it over decades?

On April 28, the Economic Club of Miami will host a member-exclusive conversation with Jim Larrañaga, one of the most accomplished leaders in college basketball.

As the winningest coach in Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball history, Coach Larrañaga transformed the program into a national contender—leading the Hurricanes to their first-ever Final Four in 2023, an Elite Eight in 2022, and multiple ACC championships.

With more than 700 career victories and multiple National Coach of the Year honors, his track record speaks for itself. But beyond the wins, he is known for something deeper: building cultures defined by discipline, resilience, and team-first mentality.

Before Miami, he led George Mason Patriots men’s basketball to a historic Final Four run in 2006—one of the greatest underdog stories in college basketball history.

🎯 Fireside Chat Theme:
Find a Way: How to Overcome Obstacles — Because There Are Always Obstacles

This will be a candid conversation on leadership, perseverance, and what it really takes to elevate a team beyond expectations.

🚀 Miami’s Next Frontier: Aerospace, Aviation & Space

At the 2026 Miami Economic Forum, hosted by the Economic Club of Miami, leaders from academia, government, and industry came together to answer a big question:
Can Miami become a global hub for aerospace and space innovation?

Moderated by Tyler Johnson of eMerge Americas, this panel featured:
• Jeanette Nuñez (FIU / Space Florida)
• Roberto Gonzalez (Miami-Dade County)
• Dr. Malou C. Harrison (Miami Dade College)
• Charles Beames (SmallSat Alliance)

The conversation made one thing clear:
👉 The future isn’t just on Earth—it’s in space, data, and national security innovation

Key themes included:
✈️ Building a world-class aviation & aerospace workforce
🎓 Aligning education with real industry needs
🛰️ Investing in research, satellites, and emerging technologies
🏗️ Creating opportunity through initiatives like a potential spaceport at Miami Executive Airport
🌎 Positioning Miami as a serious global hub—not just a destination

As one speaker put it:
“Space technology is going to change everything in the next couple of years.”

And another challenged the mindset entirely:
“Forget Silicon Valley—Miami should think of itself as ‘Space Valley.’”
