As bathhouses, sauna concepts and communal thermal wellness experiences rapidly expand worldwide, reliable business benchmarks remain scarce. The GWI Hydrothermal and Consulting Best Practices Initiatives have partnered on a first-of-its-kind global survey of bathhouse and sauna owners and operators, exploring everything from pricing and staffing to operations, thermal experiences and future growth. The confidential survey takes about 10 minutes, and participants will receive early access to the findings, expected in September 2026. Survey deadline: August 21.

Extreme heat is no longer just a climate issue—it’s becoming a health, economic and wellness industry imperative.

As record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires and climate-driven disasters intensify, governments, investors and businesses face a new reality: adapting to extreme heat will require major investment in infrastructure, while climate habitability will increasingly shape where people choose to live, travel and invest.

For the wellness tourism and real estate sectors, this shift could be especially significant, with temperate, climate-resilient destinations poised to command a growing premium.

Economist Thierry Malleret explores why extreme heat can no longer be ignored—and what it could mean for policymakers and the wellness economy.

Can a single dose of psilocybin reshape the brain?

A new study from researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and Imperial College London found that a single high dose of psilocybin produced anatomical and functional brain changes that were still visible one month later.

Researchers observed:
🧠 Denser, more robust brain nerve tracts
🧠 Greater cognitive flexibility
🧠 Increased psychological insight
🧠 Improved overall wellbeing

While these findings are preliminary, the researchers noted that the brain changes they observed were the opposite of those commonly seen in aging and dementia, offering new insight into why psilocybin has shown promise for conditions like anxiety, depression, and addiction.

How much strength training do you really need for longevity?

A new 30-year study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, tracking more than 147,000 adults, found that the greatest longevity benefits came from 90–119 minutes of strength training per week.

Researchers found this amount was associated with:
đź’Ş 13% lower risk of premature death from any cause
❤️ 19% lower risk of death from heart disease
🧠 27% lower risk of death from neurological diseases, including dementia

Even small amounts of resistance training were linked to health benefits—but around 90–119 minutes per week appeared to be the "sweet spot," with no additional longevity gains beyond that.

Read the study and see what the research says.
