Fresh from the YouTube Channel: William Yang, First Prize winner of the 11th U.S. National Chopin Piano Competition in 2025, performs Chopin's Prelude in D minor, Op. 28, No. 24, in the competition's Quarterfinal Round.

This is the last of Chopin's 24 Preludes. Chopin completed the set in the winter of 1838 into 1839 on Mallorca. Writing a piece in every major and minor key was an idea with a long history, most famously in Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, a work Chopin knew closely and reportedly brought with him to the island.

In Episode 1 of the Chopin Podcast, Garrick Ohlsson discusses the ingenious "Raindrop" Prelude, Op. 28 No. 15 in D-flat major. One of the preludes Chopin composed during his winter in Mallorca, it was named for the repeated note that runs throughout the piece. Garrick focuses on the coda that comes before the opening melody returns. In that passage, the beauty of the opening is revealed to be hovering over darkness. When the melody comes back it keeps its nature and takes on a new feeling.

New on our YouTube channel: William Ge's semifinal round performance from the 2025 National Chopin Piano Competition, where he won Fifth Prize. In this excerpt, he plays Chopin's Mazurka in F-sharp minor, Op. 59 No. 3.

Chopin wrote this set of three mazurkas in 1845, and it was one of the last sets he published. Marked Vivace, this one draws on the oberek, the fastest of the Polish folk dances behind the mazurka.

David was a finalist at the 2025 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, where critic Krzysztof Stefański of the Polish classical music magazine Ruch Muzyczny called him one of the competition's "most original participants." Here's a moment from his first-round performance of Chopin's Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48 No. 1.

Season 1, Episode 5 of the Chopin Podcast has Ben Laude and Garrick Ohlsson exploring the Études. They get into the technical demands and musicality of each one including the Op. 10 No. 12 in C minor, the one everyone knows as the "Revolutionary."

The nickname has an anniversary behind it. Warsaw fell to Russian troops on this day, September 8 in 1831. Chopin, then 21 and traveling abroad, was in Stuttgart when the news arrived. Legend says he wrote the C minor Étude that night in response. Historians have never quite been able to confirm it, but it has stuck for almost two centuries, and it is why the piece is called the Revolutionary today.
