Chopin composed the Ballade No. 2 in F major between 1836 and 1839, working on it in Nohant and during a stay in Majorca. He dedicated the piece to Robert Schumann, returning the gesture after Schumann had dedicated his Kreisleriana to Chopin the year before. The work is built on contrast: a calm theme in F major interrupted by a stormy Prestyo con fuoco in A minor.

Natasha Wu performs Chopin's Nocturne in B major, Op. 9 No. 3 in the preliminary round of the 11th U.S. National Chopin Piano Competition.

This is the last of the three nocturnes in Op. 9, composed between 1830 and 1832 when Chopin was around twenty and living in Paris. The opening theme has an unusual, chromatic quality that sets it apart from the more famous Op. 9 No. 2. Fioritura ornamentation runs through the right hand while the left hand keeps a flowing accompaniment underneath. The middle section shifts into an agitato passage with dramatic left hand figuration before the piece settles back into the opening material to close.

Mazurka in C-sharp Minor, Op. 50, No. 3. Composed by Chopin between 1841 and 1842, this piece reflects his growing interest in counterpoint, opening with the main theme presented as a delicate canon before building toward a contrapuntal stretto rare for the mazurka form. George Sand was reportedly so moved by these mazurkas that she called them worth more than forty novels.

Performed by Antoni Kleczek at the semifinals of the 11th National Chopin Piano Competition (and an artist performing for the upcoming season!).

Composed in 1842, the Fourth Ballade was the last of the four and its widely considered the most demanding, technically and musically. Chopin dedicated it to Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, who had introduced him to Parisian society.

Near the end, the music builds to a wall of sound, then suddenly pulls back to five hushed chords, a moment of total suspension. what follows is one of the most turbulent codas Chopin ever wrote.

Most of Chopin's ballades end in storm. This one ends in light.

Composed in the summer of 1841 at Nohant, the Third Ballade is the only one of Chopin's four ballades that doesn't close in a minor key. After a brief, darker turn through C-sharp minor, the music finds its way back to A-flat major and closes there.

Here is a quick look back at the two venues from last season's CHOPIN for ALL concerts: the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale and Granada Church in Coral Gables. Get ready to join us at these same great spaces soon.

The new season opens on November 7 & 8 with a pianist you might recognize. See if you can guess from a few hints: This artist was part of the National Chopin Piano Competition in January 2025. They recently graduated from Yale with a double major in Music and Philosophy.
