On February 22nd, 2015 the Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega promised the Nicaraguan public to end poverty by building the Grand Canal. This has been a dream since the 19th century and even though he promises it will deliver economic independence, prosperity and even happiness to the citizens of Nicaragua, history has proven that it will be a long and tedious challenge for a country that tried to

accomplish this in 1914 and failed. Nicaragua is the poorest Spanish speaking country in the world and the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. Fifty percent of the population is unemployed. Over two million people live in poverty. As of 2012, the majority of them lived on less than $2 a day and more than 800,000 lived on less than a dollar a day. Less than 30% of all children complete an elementary education and on average, they complete less than five years of schooling. About 95% of all disabled children receive no appropriate care. Income distribution is one of the most unfair in the globe. It is imperative that we do not look the other way and become a part of the solution in helping these children and families in having food on the table, proper clothing, education, and medical needs met.
