Big ideas matter.

But leadership is what happens after the idea. It’s the ability to move vision forward through action, collaboration, and persistence, especially in moments when the path ahead feels uncertain.

Across South Florida, nonprofit leaders are doing this work every day: turning bold goals into programs, partnerships, advocacy efforts, and real community impact.

True leadership is about imagining what’s possible, and then connecting with others to build a better world together.

Yesterday we hosted our monthly Miami Nonprofit Executive Alliancelunch bringing together nonprofit CEOs and Executive Directors for community and connection.

We were joined by leaders from organizations including Advocacy Network on Disabilities, Urban Health Partnerships, The Women's Fund Miami, Lauren's Kids, Community Reinvestment Alliance of Florida, Behavioral Science Research Institute, Neighbors 4 Neighbors, Get Redd Foundation, Children's Bereavement Center and Florida Justice Institute (FJI).

What continues to inspire us is the incredible breadth of impact represented around the table. Together, these organizations are advancing health, justice, safety, opportunity, inclusion, and support for thousands of individuals and families across our community.

This is what Miami's social impact ecosystem looks like: leaders coming together across missions, sharing ideas, building relationships, and strengthening the collective impact of our sector.

Thank you to these leaders for the work they do every day to make our community stronger.

A recent article from The Chronicle of Philanthropy highlights something many nonprofit professionals already know firsthand: burnout in our sector is rarely about a lack of passion. It’s about the growing gap between what people are being asked to carry and the support they’re given to do it.

The article points to practical shifts organizations can make, including:
🌀Treating staff capacity as a leadership issue, not an individual problem
🌀Designing roles more realistically
🌀Building a healthier workplace culture through leadership behavior
🌀Encouraging funders to invest in staff well-being, not just outcomes

Across the nonprofit sector, more leaders are openly talking about exhaustion, unsustainable workloads, and the pressure of doing mission-driven work with limited resources. Online conversations from nonprofit professionals echo the same themes: too many roles combined into one, unclear boundaries, and cultures where overwork becomes normalized.

Sustainable impact requires sustainable leadership.

What’s one change you think nonprofit organizations need to make to better support their teams?

We join the Miami community in honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of Ruth Shack, a visionary civic leader, philanthropist, and tireless champion for the Miami community.

Ruth’s impact can be felt across Miami through the countless people, organizations, and movements she helped inspire and support over the years. From advancing human rights to strengthening civic engagement and philanthropy, she helped shape a more compassionate and connected community. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

We are especially grateful for Ruth’s enthusiastic support of Leave a Legacy, the precursor to what PhilanthropyMiami is today. Her belief in the power of generosity, leadership, and community helped influence the spirit of the work we continue to carry forward.

Those who knew Ruth often described her as a force for good. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the many lives she touched through her extraordinary leadership and service.
