Bicycles are the freedom vehicle for children. They are the next building block – after our own two feet – for exploration, discovery, and wellness 🚲.

This weekend, the LifeTime.Life Foundation and the University of Miami BikeSafe program are celebrating this freedom through a special “bike rodeo” safety and skills event for families in South Florida’s Kendall and Pinecrest neighborhoods.

This one-day-only event will be held at Life Time: Miami at The Falls this Saturday, August 22nd.

This event is free and open to the entire community; a Life Time membership is not required. However, we do ask all participants to please register in advance on Eventbrite:

This is a bring-your-own bicycle event, so make sure your bicycle(s) are in good working order.

See you this Saturday! 🏅

ICYMI, we dropped by last week with the Pinecrest Police Department (and their Captain America - a.k.a. Captain Cruz).

Happy to be a part of the road safety efforts with the Village of Pinecrest and Stantec as part the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program.

ICYMI: The Safe Routes Partnership is offering $500 and $1,000 mini-grants for upcoming Walk to School Day efforts this October.

Info at the shared link below:

We’re thrilled to announce that the Safe Routes Partnership will offer mini grants for the 2026 Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day! We’re offering grants of $500 and $1,000 to support local celebrations.

This powerful day honors 6-year-old Ruby Bridges, who bravely integrated her elementary school in 1960. Every year, students, families, and schools walk together to celebrate Ruby’s courage and spark conversations about anti-racism, kindness, and making positive change in our communities.

We’re releasing the application questions a few weeks early to help you prepare. The official application will open July 7 and close September 4, but you can start planning now.

We can’t wait to see how you celebrate Ruby’s legacy in your community!

Sidewalk protection at construction sites should be a mandatory element of safe transportation infrastructure for any city.

Good to see the City of Miami finally putting this forth.

After months of resident complaints, a proposed ordinance would require temporary pedestrian protection at commercial construction sites, addressing one of Coconut Grove's most persistent frustrations: prolonged sidewalk closures.

The New York Times has released an excellent summary of the dangers posed to pedestrians by taller, larger trucks and automobiles.

Props to the NY Times for modeling C-pillar blind spot issues.

However, unprotected left turns on green are strangely absent from the article, despite contributing to crashes directly related to C-pillar blind spots.

Unprotected left turns on green *cannot be ignored,* as they give both drivers and pedestrians a clear phase. This creates a point on the crosswalk where both will cross paths at the same time (Example: The crash that killed Daniel Bishop at LeJeune and Altara Ave. in Coral Gables).

These unprotected left turns on green are estimated to contribute to 20% - if not more - of all left turn crashes. C-pillars that block outward visibility are not the single cause, but a further problem on top of a pre-existing issue.

The vehicles on American roads have grown larger — and they are killing thousands more pedestrians, a Times investigation found.

Right turns on red: Why they're dangerous.

The right turn on red, or "RTOR," became a nationwide standard in 1975, as part of an attempt to reduce idling and save gas through the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.

Unfortunately, right turns on red did very little to curb emissions, and they've shown to increase the risk of pedestrian crashes at intersections from 40 to 107%. The possibility of a driver failing to yield to a pedestrian also goes up to 92% with a right turn on red permitted.

There's a lot more to safer streets than the four improvements we already shared!

Let's look at four *more* things - bollards, roundabouts, pedestrian scramble crosswalks, and speed tables (a.k.a. speed bumps) - that can make our streets that much better and safer when our mode of transportation is our own two feet.

reminds us to recognize the importance of our urban green spaces for their natural beauty and inherent benefit to us all as transportation corridors.

Those of us using human powered vehicles (bicycles, skateboards and more) to get around town greatly benefit from these routes and the that connect to them. Not only do trails provide a safe place where the commute can be genuinely relaxing and enjoyable, every one of us using a trail takes one less car off the streets, reducing traffic congestion.

And for rural areas, trails provide amazing open spaces for riding that also link us with neighbors a few miles away, especially when two-lane blacktops are just too dangerous for riding.

Trails are truly a triple win for everyone. Three cheers for trails.
