Essential Haus honors Alphonzo Guinyard, 26, a Titusville, Florida native. Alphonzo was stabbed to death by his partner during an argument about their relationship on Sunday, January 24, 2016.

At about 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Alphonzo visited his boyfriend at his home to talk about their relationship. At some point, Alphonzo demanded to see his partners phone because he believed he was cheating on him.

They began arguing and his boyfriend told Alphonzo to leave. Alphonzo didn’t leave so his boyfriend called 911 to report an “unwanted person” in his home. After he called 911 the argument escalated into a fight on the first floor. That’s when Alphonzo’s boyfriend left from the fight, went upstairs to the second floor, and got a knife from the kitchen. He went back downstairs, and stabbed Alphonzo in the back.

Alphonzo was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The boyfriend called 911 and admitted he stabbed Alphonzo, who was not armed, prosecutors said. A blood-covered stainless steel knife 8-9 inches long was found on the kitchen counter.

Alphonzo was a friend, son, cousin and so much more. He was chasing his dreams of modeling, acting and performing. His life was taken in the cruelest way possible by someone he loved and trusted. Deepest sympathies to his mother, family and friends on his passing. Rest easy Phonzo. 💜

Katrina Hayes (she/her) is a 4th year MD/MPH student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She plans to become a psychiatrist, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry and LGBTQ+ mental health.

In medical school, Katrina has worked with the unhoused community as a case coordinator, a community liaison for mobile needle exchange clinic, and a researcher for her own work on LGBTQ wellness and safety. As a member of the LGBTQ community and survivor of sexual violence, Katrina hopes to raise awareness of LGBTQ health disparities and provide emotional support for those in crisis. Katrina promotes the notion that “Holding onto secrets is a way to hold shame that doesn’t belong to you”.

Katrina joins the mission to remove the shame of speaking out against domestic violence and empower her LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters.

Essential Haus honors Adeja Lee Monae Baca, who was 19 years old when her life was taken by her 20 year old girlfriend following a domestic dispute.

Documents say the two were arguing inside a car on November 19, 2023 when Adeja Baca tried to exit the vehicle, her girlfriend maliciously hit the gas, throwing Baca to the pavement. She died from her injuries a few days later. The family said this wasn’t the first time things got out of hand with the girlfriend. “For the past year we’ve been having to run because this girl has been hurting Adeja, you know, this is already the second, third time she’s had to go to the emergency room,” Adeja’s mother said.

But, the family said, Baca always went back. “We lost our baby, we lost our baby, She won’t be forgotten. She can’t be replaced,” the family said. “We just want to create awareness so this doesn’t happen to another little girl. Somebody’s daughter. Somebody’s baby!”

Essential Haus honors Matthew Rairdon, who was 22 years old when his life was taken in 2013.

Matthew was returning home from his job as a nurse at a local hospital when he was shot to death by his former boyfriend, who he recently ended a relationship with.

Matthew had a love for music and acting. He just finished nursing school and landed his dream job as a nurse. Rairdon enjoyed the ER work environment and all the wonderful people he called his “work family.”

Essential Haus honors Brayla Stone, a 17 year old transgender who’s life was taken by a dating partner in an effort to cover up their relationship.

Brayla was killed just 3 weeks after her 17th birthday. Stone was someone who always held space for others to be themselves and express their identities; she was a young black girl who had hopes, dreams and community. 💜
