SOS South Pacific Otters: Stop the Extermination Between Quilca - Camaná
**A Silent Crisis on the Arequipa Coastline**
The coastal strip of the southern Peruvian Pacific, specifically between **Quilca - Camaná(Arequipa)**, is currently the setting for an environmental tragedy that requires urgent attention. Marine otter populations—iconic inhabitants of our marine ecosystem—face relentless persecution that is pushing them toward local extinction.
Day after day, these animals are systematically attacked and killed. Due to the alteration of their natural habitat, otters seek refuge by climbing onto boats; however, when they board local artisanal fishing vessels, instead of receiving protection, they are brutally massacred.
**Official Indifference**
Despite the gravity of this situation, the competent authorities in southern Peru maintain a **complicit silence and total inaction**. There are no inspection operations, awareness campaigns, or effective protection measures to halt this ecocide. In the absence of state intervention, civil society and committed organizations bear the moral responsibility to act before it is too late.
**The Urgent Call from IPUMA USA**
As **President of the NGO IPUMA USA**, I raise my voice and issue a firm call to the international community, wildlife defenders, and the general public: **we must stop this extermination**.
The images documenting this cruelty are harsh and difficult to show, but they are necessary. Concealing reality will not save a single otter; exposing it is the first step toward awakening consciences and demanding justice for the defenseless.
**Our Solution: Refuges and Ecosystem Recovery**
To halt this massacre and ensure the survival of the species, IPUMA USA is driving an **emergency plan to establish specialized refuges** along the southern coast of Peru.
This project includes concrete actions:
* **Construction of safe nests and artificial resting areas** along the coast, reducing the need for otters to seek refuge on fishing boats.
* **Rehabilitation and recovery areas** for injured or rescued specimens, allowing their eventual reintroduction into the marine ecosystem.
* **Community education and awareness programs** aimed at the artisanal fishing sector to foster peaceful coexistence with marine wildlife.
**How You Can Help**
The conservation of our biodiversity cannot wait. We urgently need to raise funds to set up these refuges, acquire rescue supplies, and finance protection infrastructure in Camaná and Mollendo.
**Join our cause!** Every contribution, no matter how small, translates into a chance at life for the otters of the South Pacific. If we do not take action today, no one else will.
