Documentary: We’re All Plastic People Now

For those that weren’t able to see if earlier, here is another opportunity. As you can deduce from the title, this PBS film documents the impact of plastic in our world as well as our personal health. Beyond the mounting trash problem, what effect do these plastic chemicals have on our body? Are we facing a similar health crisis that the Romans faced with their use of lead? What about PFAS?

We will also include a discussion after the video to reflect on how this affects us personally and what can we do about it. Please join us for this timely topic.

6 pm to 8 pm in GC140 at the FIU Tamiami Campus

Join us on Sunday, Feb. 8 for our monthly meeting with special guest Amanda Prieto with !

In 2021, our county commissioners approved a plan to develop 168 acres at the old Calusa Golf Course. In the 15 years since it was a golf course, Mother Nature reclaimed part of the land as a bird rookery for tri-colored herons, egrets, anhinga, and other wildlife. The plan was put on hold, but has now made it back on the agenda for the commissioners to decide what happens next, and how much protection will be given to the wildlife.

Amanda Prieto has been working on protecting the green space in this neighborhood for years, and will be speaking about the current status of the property and what WE can do to protect this ‘suburban wild space’. She is passionate about empowering communities to shape development outcomes that balance growth, environmental protection, and long-term quality of life.

This meeting is also our social time together, those who want to participate, please bring a plant-based dish to share with others for dinner at 5pm before the meeting begins at 6pm. RSVP at the link in the bio!

Once again, the developers are trying to rezone a former golf course turned rookery into another gated housing project, much to the dismay of the Calusa neighbors. This will be on the county commission agenda on Jan. 22. Please contact your commissioners or plan on attending the commission meeting.

Stop a large-scale development on 168 acres of green space in Calusa, West Kendall.

We don’t want an incinerator ANYWHERE in Miami-Dade County, don’t make us pay for a waste incinerator that will pollute our air, water and soil!
