🌿 FIELD TRIP - NED GLEN NATURE PRESERVE
Saturday, MAY 23, 2026, 9AM-11AM

📍Meeting location: SW 87 Ave and SW 188 St., Cutler Bay, FL 33157 . From SW 184 Street (east of US1), travel south on SW 87th Ave., past SW 188 Street. Park inside or near the entrance gate on the west side of the avenue.

💪Difficulty: Moderate. There are no real paths, but the site is small (11 acres). Short distances, areas of jagged rock, small solution holes. Poisonwood is present.

🌿Description: This is a high-quality, high-diversity urban pine rockland toward the southern terminus of rocklands with Northern Biscayne soils (sandy pockets). Miami-Dade County conducted a prescribed burn about 6 months ago, so we hope to be greeted with a colorful diversity of native wildflowers such as Liatris tenuifolia, Symphyotrichum concolor, Galactia floridana, and many others. Some rare plants include Argythamnia blodgettii and Euphorbia deltoidea. This also a good site to see Crossopetalum rhacoma behaving like groundcover in the frequently-burned pineland. We were last here during the Native Plant Field Day event in March 2021.

🥾Bring/wear: Long pants and sleeves, sturdy shoes with thick soles for jagged rock, water, bug spray (just in case), sun protection. A walking stick may be helpful to some for extra stability. Binoculars can be handy for viewing wildlife.

📝 Note: No restrooms. Pets are not allowed on our field trips.

“Ned Glenn Nature Preserve is owned by the Miami-Dade County School Board, and the preserve is adjacent to Whispering Pines Elementary.“

🌿Dade Chapter’s iNaturalist project. Add your DCFNPS field trip nature photos to iNaturalist for inclusion in our project to help us showcase the amazing biodiversity we find! Upload photos via the iNaturalist website: www.inaturalist.org or app. Then add them to “Florida Native Plant Society- Dade Chapter Field Trips”.

🌼 Note: Non-members are welcome! We encourage joining to support the mission of FNPS. Membership is only $50/year. [email protected]

🌿 Dear Dade Chapter Members,

We are reaching out with an urgent action alert regarding a growing environmental crisis here in Miami—one that directly impacts our mission to protect, preserve, and promote Florida’s native plants and ecosystems.

🚨 Miami is facing a tree emergency. 🚨

Across our city, mature, native, and specimen trees are being removed at an alarming rate—often in public rights-of-way and frequently justified under vague claims such as “conflict with construction.” These losses are happening faster than they can be replaced, weakening our already fragile urban canopy.

As advocates for native plants and healthy ecosystems, we know that trees are not simply ornamental—they are critical infrastructure in a climate-vulnerable region like South Florida. They:

🌳 Reduce extreme heat and protect public health

🌳 Absorb stormwater and reduce flooding

🌳 Improve air quality

🌳 Support wildlife and biodiversity

🌳 Enhance property values and neighborhood livability

Yet current trends suggest a system that prioritizes rapid development over environmental protection, with insufficient oversight, mitigation, and transparency.

🚨 We need your voice—right now! 🚨

We strongly encourage all members to take a moment today to send an email to Miami’s Mayor and City Commissioners demanding immediate action to protect our urban forest.
