Saving Wild Tigers

Saving Wild Tigers Our focus is on wild tigers on the Indian subcontinent, the most viable and bio-diverse home of the wild tiger.

We do not support captive breeding of tigers - our conservation activities are selected in consultations with world's tiger experts.

We are happy to continue to support Dr Jeffrey Lang and the Gharial Ecology Project

Jeffrey W. Lang, PhD, senior scientific advisor and mentor to the Gharial Ecology Project recently received the prestigious George Amato Award for Excellence in Science! Dr. Lang was presented the Amato Award during Winter CrocFest at St Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park on 13 December 2025. Dr Lang received this honor for his outstanding contributions in support of crocodilian science and conservation. The Gharial Ecology Project has been privileged to receive Dr Lang's mentorship first-hand and witness his long-term dedication to unraveling the secret lives of gharials and aiding in their recovery. We could not be prouder and happier!

Our friend Sanjna Kapoor, wife of late Valmik Thapar, shared this short film she made in Corbett of a rare encounter between tiger and crocodile. There is still so much to learn about the wilderness.

Conservation of gharials began in 1975, but 50 years later the fate of these slender snouted crocodiles remains precarious. Sandeep Rai, Assistant Editor at the Times of India, has written on why long-term efforts have yielded lesser than expected conservation dividends. Mr Rai garnered inputs from several people including our own senior scientific advisor, Dr Jeffrey W. Lang, in writing this article. The central message of the article is clear- that captive rearing and release of gharials was clearly important decades ago when total numbers were critically low but is now minimally effective in stabilizing or increasing population numbers. If we want to ensure the survival of gharials in the future, we need to focus our attention on protecting and restoring riverine habitats on which these unique animals depend. We need to recognize the inextricable link between our gharials and our rivers!

I first witnessed a tiger in the wild in Ranthambhore around 3 decades ago. At the time I had begun my research on how best I can support tiger and tiger habitat conservation.

NGOs had already been working with the local communities surrounding the national park to support their intention to honor and protect wildlife given that wildlife could be detrimental to their crops, cattle, and their own personal safety.

Wild tiger numbers have risen in the 3 decades, and so has the human population making co-existence even more challenging.

continues to support Ranthambhore via and one of the ways is through educating the young ones in the surrounding community.

Thanks to all of you who have supported Saving Wild Tigers and trusted that every $ you donate goes directly to India for this work on the ground.

Tiger Watch’s commitment to empowering forest-edge communities through
education entered a new phase with the launch of the Digital Education Centre at
Ramsinghpura, Sawai Madhopur. Born from our conviction that digital literacy is
essential for youth to access stable, skill-based livelihoods—and to foster local
stewardship of tiger habitats—this flagship centre has demonstrated remarkable
success in bridging the technology gap. Building on those outcomes, we have since
established two additional centres: one at Jhiri in Dholpur and another at
Anandipura in Tonk.
Why Anandipura? Anandipura is not just another village—it is a community of
conservation heroes. Relocated from within the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve’s
core to its periphery, the people of Anandipura sacrificed their ancestral lands for
the welfare of tigers and forest. Yet, despite careful planning, their new settlement
still lacks reliable basic services; educational and healthcare facilities remain
underdeveloped. The idea of a digital education centre here would have once
seemed impossible. It is therefore both fitting and urgent that we begin our work
in Anandipura, honoring their sacrifice by opening doors to technology and
opportunity where even the essentials are scarce

Nina Rao, chair woman of visiting with Valmik Thapar with his wife Sanjna at their home (and veritable museum of wildlife art) in New Delhi Oct 2024.

It’s been almost 30 years since Nina Rao met Valmik for the first time in her search for the true protectors of India’s wild tigers. Valmik was the original inspiration for the name of our organization and has been a constant mentor and friend for many conservationists and lovers of wildlife particularly tigers and other big cats. He’s hosted numerous documentaries, written dozens of books, and 100s of articles on tiger conservation, and served as advisor for a number of NGOs and Tiger Link.

UPDATE: only 11 days later on May 31st, 2025, the man of tigers is at rest. We'll miss you Valu. Thank you for all you have done and may your words action, and passion for tigers continue to be shared.
