Happy Father’s Day to all dads, but especially the ones who do the heavy lifting! 🪸

Meet the seahorse dad. In the seahorse world, mom hands over the eggs, and dad takes it from there. He carries the developing babies in a specialized pouch, supplies them with oxygen and nutrients, and eventually goes through labor to bring them into the world.

When the time comes, a seahorse father can give birth to hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of tiny seahorses in a single brood. Talk about earning the right to take a nap.

Today, we celebrate every father who nurtures, protects, sacrifices, and helps the next generation thrive. And we give a special nod to the seahorse dads, who take parenting to extraordinary lengths.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved Black Americans in Texas were informed of their emancipation, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. As we reflect on Juneteenth, it is crucial to recognize its relevance to ongoing struggles for justice, including the environmental justice movement.

Environmental justice and racial justice are inseparable. Black communities continue to face disproportionate environmental burdens, from pollution to extreme heat, rooted in systemic inequities.

Today, we honor Black history, resilience, and leadership while recommitting to a future where every community has access to clean air, safe water, and healthy neighborhoods. Follow The CLEO Institute for more.

Sorry, but it’s time to defend cockroaches.

What do cockroaches and carbon have in common?

They’re both necessary. Carbon is a building block of life. Cockroaches, as much as we’d prefer not to see them, play a vital role in making sure carbon gets recycled into more life. 

But even if we acknowledge that cockroaches are necessary, cockroaches and carbon dioxide have another thing in common: too much is not good.

A mother collared pratincole recently captured global attention after standing her ground as a tractor approached her nest. These remarkable birds nest directly on open ground, relying on camouflage to hide their eggs from predators.

Moments like this are a powerful reminder that we share the landscape with wildlife. Just as it’s not really “shark-infested waters” but a shark’s home, or a deer “crossing the road” when, in reality, the road crossed its habitat, our perspective often overlooks that we are the newcomers. As habitats continue to shrink and fragment through development, these moments underscore the importance of designing communities that leave room for wildlife to survive and coexist.

Who should have the power to shape the future of Florida’s communities?

Samantha Kaddis, Policy & Advocacy Campaigns Manager with The CLEO Institute, explores that question in her latest op-ed, published by the Tampa Bay Times.

As Samantha writes, “Local governments are often the first to respond to the impacts of our warming climate, but their ability to act is being hamstrung.”

Her op-ed examines the role of local governments in addressing the impacts of a warming climate, the effects of state preemption, and the importance of civic engagement in shaping Florida’s future.

The solution?

On Aug. 18 and Nov. 3, Floridians will have the opportunity to vote. These elections will shape who represents us in Tallahassee, and whether short-sighted policies like this continue. Because the truth is, preemption only happens if we keep electing leaders who want to take away local control.
