The Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) brought physicians and healthcare leaders together for an engaging AI Conference focused on one of the most consequential transformations in medicine.

From understanding the latest advances in AI to exploring its applications in medical education, career development and reducing administrative burdens, the program offered practical insights into how AI is reshaping healthcare. Speakers also examined the importance of thoughtful governance and the physician’s essential role in ensuring that AI-assisted diagnosis complements, not replaces, clinical judgment.

A recurring message resonated throughout the conference: physicians must have a voice in shaping the future of AI in medicine.

As Jennifer Goldman, DO emphasized, multidisciplinary governance and meaningful conversations are essential as we consider what kind of profession we are leaving for future physicians.

Attila Hertelendy, Ph.D. Florida International University challenged attendees to look beyond the AI “extinction narrative” and recognize that we are at a critical inflection point. Physicians must take ownership, embrace accountability and remain actively engaged to ensure that technological disruption serves patients and the profession. His caution against “cognitive surrender” reinforced the importance of preserving independent clinical judgment.

With insights from BCMA president Christopher Chang, MD; Yasmeen Abdulrazzak, MD; Marta Telatin, DO; Jennifer Goldman DO, MBA, FAAFP; Attila Hertelendy, Ph.D.; and Liliya Ryshchak, M.D., the conference underscored a central principle: AI’s future in healthcare must be guided by physician leadership, education, collaboration and responsible governance.

As Dr. Chang noted, he is proud to host events like this, creating opportunities for physicians to learn, exchange ideas and help shape what comes next.

The future of medicine is not simply about adopting AI. It is about ensuring that physicians remain at the center of the conversation.

Scholarship Opportunity for Future Physicians!

The Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) is pleased to announce the 2027 Cynthia Peterson Legacy Fund Scholarship for Future Physicians, established to honor Cynthia Peterson’s remarkable career and nearly three decades of dedicated service as BCMA’s Executive Vice President, from 1990 to 2024.

This scholarship recognizes the promise of future physicians and their potential to make a meaningful contribution to healthcare in South Florida.

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligible applicants must be either:

- Broward County residents who are enrolled in or have been accepted to an allopathic (MD) or osteopathic (DO) medical school, or
- Students currently attending or accepted to an allopathic or osteopathic medical school located in Broward County, regardless of residency.
