The Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) is a free nutrition and health assistance program that supports pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under the age of 5. In Miami-Dade County, WIC services are provided through the Florida Department of Health to help families maintain healthy pregnancies and support child development.
WIC is available for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, postpartum women, infants, and young children. Many families qualify if they receive Medicaid, SNAP/Food Stamps, or TANF benefits. Working families may also qualify based on household income.
The program offers healthy foods such as milk, eggs, cereal, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, cheese, beans, peanut butter, baby food, and formula through a WIC EBT card that can be used at approved grocery stores. WIC also provides breastfeeding support, lactation counseling, free breast pumps for eligible mothers, nutrition education, healthy pregnancy guidance, and referrals to healthcare and community services.
Enrolling in WIC early during pregnancy can help moms receive nutritious foods for babyโs growth, learn healthy eating habits, prepare for breastfeeding and newborn care, and reduce pregnancy complications related to poor nutrition.
Many mothers do not realize that WIC benefits continue after delivery. Postpartum mothers can still receive benefits after birth, breastfeeding mothers may continue receiving support until the baby turns one year old, and children can receive WIC benefits until age 5.
Remember to enroll in the WIC program during and after pregnancy to continue receiving nutritional support, healthy foods, breastfeeding assistance, and valuable resources for both mom and baby. ๐
