I look forward to welcoming the House Foreign Affairs Committee to Miami to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of ’s historic 11J pro-democracy protests, featuring a panel discussion where we will be joined by Cuban opposition leader Rosa María Payá CubaDecide, activist Orlando Gutierrez, and members of Congress.

We will discuss the Cuban dictatorship’s ongoing repression against pro-democracy activists, highlight the recent Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos report that the regime killed Oswaldo Payá, and call attention to the dire situation of 1,000+ Cuban political prisoners, such as activist José Daniel Ferrer, music artists Maykel Osorbo & Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, and many more.

This past Sunday we hosted the Victims of Communism Day Memorial Event at the Museum Honoring Brigade 2506, to commemorate the more than 100 million worldwide victims of communism.

We heard the testimony of those who suffered under communism and were joined by Senator Manny Diaz Jr., Rep. David Borrero, Rep. Alex Rizo, and Rep. Tom Fabricio to announce the filing of their Victims of Communism Bill, which will commemorate November 7th every year in Florida as Victims of Communism Day and require schools to teach about the history of atrocities and crimes committed by communist governments in Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, China, North Korea, and the Soviet Union.

At the event, Armando Ibarra announced the founding of the Victims of Communism Florida Commission, which will work with civic leaders to educate Floridians about the history of communist crimes and atrocities.

Thank you to Cuban dissident leader Rosa María Payá, Kennedy Bolivar, and others that honored us with their testimony, as well as the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.

The proposed Florida Senate bill 286 and House bill 395 will ensure each November 7th is commemorated as “Victims of Communism Day” and teach students the horrors of communism in school.
