We are deeply saddened by the passing of Robina Nyakwezi, a remarkable woman, a pillar of strength, and a cherished member of the Batwa Elderly Committee at The Batwa Empowerment Village. At 83 years old, she leaves behind a legacy of resilience, wisdom, and unwavering love for her tribe. Her absence creates a void that can never truly be filled.

Robina was more than a guardian of Batwa culture—she was its living embodiment. She carried the stories of her ancestors in her heart, sharing them with passion and grace. Her wisdom shaped our community, and her strength inspired generations. She played an instrumental role in preserving Batwa traditions, empowering younger generations to take pride in their identity, and working tirelessly for self-reliance. Her invaluable indigenous knowledge was key to the success of Exiles in the Impenetrable Forest, where she shared authentic and heartfelt stories of life in the forest.

Even in her old age, Robina remained bold, hardworking, and full of life. She had a way of making you feel at home, of teaching, and of reminding the Batwa all of the strength in their roots. Her jokes, her stories, and her love for Batwa heritage will be deeply missed.

Her passing is an immeasurable loss to the Indigenous Batwa community, but her legacy will live on.

Rest in peace, Robina. You will never be forgotten.
Que su alma descanse en paz.

Back to school, back to dreams! ✨ Our Batwa children are always excited to return to school because, as Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ Thanks to our incredible friends and supporters, many of our children can chase their dreams.

But while some step into classrooms, others remain behind due to lack of tuition. In our new Kisoro settlement, more than half of the children won’t be starting school this term. Your support can change that. Let’s ensure no child is left behind. 🤍

A Glimpse into the Batwa’s Past: Life in the Rainforest🌿✨

For close to 80,000 years, the Indigenous Batwa thrived in the dense rainforests, living in harmony with nature. Every tree, every trail, every sound of the forest was part of their existence—providing food, shelter, medicine, and spiritual connection. Their homeland was more than a place; it was their identity.

But today, the Batwa face a new reality. Displaced from their ancestral lands and without a clear resettlement plan, they struggle to find a balance between preserving their rich and special cultural heritage and adapting to a world that often overlooks them.

At The Batwa Empowerment Village, we are working to bridge this gap—honoring the Batwa’s traditions while equipping them with essential skills for a self-sustaining future.

Adapting to Change
The transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to that of subsistence farming was not an easy one for Ndeje and her people. They faced numerous challenges, including discrimination, lack of land ownership, and limited access to education and healthcare. Despite these challenges, Ndeje's resilience and determination were unwavering. She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of preserving their cultural heritage while embracing the new opportunities and challenges that came with change.

Advocate for Batwa Rights
Ndeje soon became an advocate for her people, lending her voice to their struggles. She collaborated with local organizations and NGOs to champion Batwa rights, ensuring that her people had access to healthcare, education, and land. Ndeje's efforts made her a respected figure among the Batwa and the wider Ugandan society.

A Repository of Cultural Knowledge
Ndeje's extensive knowledge of the forest, traditional medicines, and the Batwa way of life made her an invaluable source of cultural knowledge. In her later years, she worked closely with anthropologists and researchers, sharing her experiences and wisdom with the world. Ndeje's efforts in preserving Batwa culture have been instrumental in documenting the tribe's rich heritage for future generations.

A Life Well-Lived
In her final years, Ndeje enjoyed a life surrounded by her loving family, friends, and community. She often shared stories of her life in the forest and imparted lessons of resilience, adaptability, and the importance of community bonds. Ndeje's life, spanning more than a century, serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Batwa people, their ability to overcome adversity, and their ongoing fight for recognition, dignity, and rights.
As we remember Ndeje today, let us honor her life by acknowledging the challenges faced by the Batwa people and standing in solidarity with their quest for a brighter, more equitable future.

Ndeje: A Century of Wisdom and Resilience
Ndeje, an elderly Batwa woman, passed on today at the venerable age of 101, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, wisdom, and an indomitable spirit. As we celebrate her long life and honor her memory, let us take a moment to journey through the various stages of Ndeje's life and the lessons she imparted to her community and the world at large.

Early Life
Ndeje was born in 1922, in the dense forests of southwestern Uganda, which were once home to the Batwa people. As a traditional hunter-gatherer tribe, the Batwa lived in harmony with nature, depending on the forest for their livelihood, sustenance, and spiritual connection. Growing up, Ndeje learned the ancient art of tracking, hunting, and gathering medicinal plants, as well as the rituals and ceremonies that formed the cultural backbone of her people.

Forced Displacement
In the 1990s, Ndeje's life took a dramatic turn when the Ugandan government established the Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, displacing the Batwa from their ancestral lands. Ndeje and her family were among the hundreds of Batwa families forced to leave their forest homes and adapt to a new way of life.

Two weeks ago, we hosted at the Batwa Empowerment Village in Bwindi, Uganda. During her trip to Uganda with the aim to contribute to the conservation of the Mountain Gorillas 🦍, she spared some time to visit the forgotten Indigenous Batwa people who actually lost their land to pave way for Gorilla conservation.

After visiting and learning about all that the Batwa have had to go through for years since the eviction, Saloua is working with us to help raise awareness and also support a greater priority cause which is acquiring the much needed land for settlement of the Batwa community. We’ve scheduled an interview with her tomorrow at 12:00pm CET which will be between her and one of the Batwa graduates at the Batwa Empowerment Village, be there to catch and listen to the Batwa stories directly from the Indigenous People.

Together we can fight for this much needed change and create a healthy life for the Indigenous Batwa community.
