On December 4, the Japan-America Society of Miami/South Florida (JASMSFL) closed out the year with a Bōnenkai, or “forget-the-year” gathering, hosted at the Coral Gables Museum. Guests came together in a spirit of friendship and cultural appreciation, reflecting on the past year while welcoming the promise of the new one.

A highlight of the evening was the extraordinary performance by Master Inami Woodcarver Nambu Hakkun, who shared his artistry with attendees. His demonstration brought centuries of Japanese craftsmanship to life, offering a rare glimpse into the precision, beauty, and cultural depth of traditional Inami woodcarving.

Guests enjoyed the performance and the warmth of fellowship that defines the Society’s mission: strengthening ties between Japan and South Florida.

The event was generously sponsored by Becker & Poliakoff and Emergent Global Investments, and made possible through the collaboration with Poiesis, with support from the The Japan Foundation, New York and The Tokyo Club.

If you are inspired by Japanese culture and eager to explore educational programs, cultural events, and community connections, we invite you to join the JASMSFL. Membership opens the door to opportunities to deepen your understanding of Japan while building lasting friendships in South Florida. Click on the link to learn more: https://jasmsfl.org/membership/

For the first time ever, Master Nambu Hakuun, third-generation Inami Woodcarver, is leaving Japan for a world tour, and bringing centuries of Japanese craftsmanship to the United States. We are honored to host him in Miami.

Inami woodcarving is an “art of subtraction”, where masterpieces are carved from a single block of wood, revealing breathtaking depth and movement. Master Hakuun, trained under the historic Nanbu Hakuun lineage for over a decade in the traditional apprenticeship system, has created works that grace temples, shrines, and landmarks in Japan, including Senso-ji Temple in Tokyo.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to see the living spirit of the shokunin, a master craftsman whose life is dedicated to beauty, precision, and cultural stewardship.
