I want to personally address rumors that we have been hearing at worksites, over email and from calls into the union office.

Yes, AFSCME Local 1184 still exists! Your contract is still valid! In fact, we are at the bargaining table right now working on the next contract!

It is understandable that there are questions since you may be seeing union representatives less often. That is because of a change in state law, pushed by anti-union politicians and signed by Governor DeSantis, that stops your Local 1184 officers from using leave time to assist in organizing to build membership or come to the worksites to visit members and potential members.

What you can do right now: share this with your coworkers, union and nonunion. Union members need to stand strong and make sure we all get out and vote. Nonunion members need to join today – or we all will suffer – at www.afscmefl.org/join.

If SB1296 sounds familiar, that’s because it isn’t the first time Florida lawmakers have come after us. Since SB256 was passed in 2023, more than 100 public-sector bargaining units have been decertified and at least 69,000 workers have lost voice at the bargaining table.

SB1296 goes even further. SB 1296 requires 50% of the entire bargaining unit to vote in the next recertification election. Not 50% of those who show up to vote — 50% of every worker. If turnout is low for any reason — illness, scheduling, life — the union disappears.

Every time we learn the game, they change the rules. That means we must be doing something right! They are trying to silence the voices of the workers like you - the backbone of the 3rd largest school district in the nation!

Don’t let them silence your voice! Don’t let them take your benefits away! Don’t let them make you a-will employees! STAND WITH YOUR UNION AND FIGHT! If we don’t, who is going to stand up and fight for better working conditions? Who will fight for better pay and to not outsource our jobs? Life as we know it will not exist.

This back to school season, we're celebrating AFSCME members for all the hard work they do to support students and schools. Every role plays an important part in creating a safe and welcoming environment where students can learn and grow. From librarians and custodians to bus drivers, cafeteria workers, paraprofessionals, and so many others, thank you for keeping our schools running every day.

Union moms do it all: raise families, care for others and fight for dignity on the job. This Mother’s Day, we honor the working mothers who never stop showing up for their loved ones, coworkers and communities.

It’s Public Service Recognition Week – a time that we reflect on the essential work that AFSCME members do. Whether responding to emergencies, taking our kids to school, keeping our streets and drinking water clean or caring for the sick, public service workers are the backbone of our communities. They deserve respect and dignity for all they do. This week, we extend our deepest gratitude to all those who dedicate their lives and careers to helping others, and we commit to always continuing to fight for the strong public services our communities deserve.
