In 1965, Sisters Madeline Dorsey and Christine Donnelly answered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for support from people of faith, joining thousands of nonviolent demonstrators in Selma, Alabama, to advocate for Black citizens’ right to vote. Standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow marchers, these Maryknoll Sisters put their faith into action and courageously supported the fight for civil rights. 🙏🏽

Their witness reflects the power of solidarity, justice, and nonviolent action. By standing alongside those demanding equality, Sisters Madeline and Christine demonstrated what it means to make God’s love visible through compassion, courage, and a commitment to human dignity. 🌟

As prioress, Mother Pauline Gannon, OP, helped expand the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Houston, opening 16 new schools across 10 cities and two states! Her leadership brought educational opportunities to more communities and strengthened the congregation’s commitment to serving through education.

Mother Pauline also laid the groundwork for Dominican College, helping make higher education more accessible to local women and sisters. Through her vision and dedication, she helped create opportunities for generations of learners and advanced the Dominican mission of education and service. ❤️

Her legacy reminds us how visionary leadership and a commitment to learning can transform communities and open doors for others. 🌟

In 1891, Sr. Mary Bertrand Sheridan, OP, answered a call to serve French-Canadian and French-American mill workers in Fall River, Massachusetts. Moved by the needs of these local communities, she founded the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, Fall River, establishing a lasting Dominican presence rooted in service and compassion.

Her story reflects the courage and missionary spirit of Dominican women who responded to the needs of their communities, bringing faith, hope, and support to immigrant families and working people. 🙏🏽

📚✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Vivien Jennings, OP, PhD ✨🇺🇸

A visionary educator, leader, and communicator, Sr. Vivien Jennings, OP, PhD, dedicated 66 years of religious life to education, community building, and the Dominican mission. 📚

As president of Caldwell College from 1984 to 1994, Sr. Vivien helped lead the institution through a transformative era, including its transition to coeducation in 1985. She also expanded intercollegiate athletics and introduced the Fanjeaux study-abroad program, connecting students with the Catholic-Dominican tradition.

Her commitment to education reached far beyond campus. Following Newark’s 1967 civil unrest, she founded the Link Educational Center, believing education could help heal communities. She also served as president of the Dominican Leadership Conference and held numerous teaching and communications roles throughout her career. 🌎

Through her compassion, determination, and belief in the power of learning, Sr. Vivien inspired generations of students and strengthened the Dominican mission. Her legacy continues to shape lives today. 💙

🌟✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Teresa Houlihan, OP ✨

When Sr. Teresa Houlihan, OP, was asked as a teenager, “What contribution will you make to the life of the Church?” she discovered that her gifts for faith, study, and teaching could become a lifelong vocation. 📚

As a professor of philosophy at Aquinas College, Sr. Teresa inspired students to wrestle with important questions and explore the faith more deeply. She later served two terms as Prioress and became a beloved voice on philosophy and Catholic Social Teaching.

At 97, and celebrating 75 years as a Catholic Sister, Sr. Teresa continues to encourage others to faithfully answer God’s call—even in the most challenging times. 💙

In 1944, Sr. M. Jeanette Jacke, OP, made history as the first recipient of the prestigious J. Leon Lascoff Memorial Award, established by the American College of Apothecaries to recognize high professional standards in pharmacy! 🏆

As chief pharmacist at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, Queens, New York, Sr. Jeanette had already spent 35 years managing the hospital’s pharmacy at the time of her award. Her dedication extended beyond the hospital, as she participated in national pharmaceutical organizations, helping shape the future of pharmacists, educators, and legislators. 💊

Sr. Jeanette’s legacy highlights the important contributions Dominican Sisters have made to healthcare and the advancement of their professions through expertise, leadership, and service. ❤️

🌿 Indigenous Peoples’ Day 🌎

Today, the Dominican Sisters Conference honors the histories, cultures, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples. We recognize the deep connections Indigenous communities maintain with the land, their traditions, and one another, while acknowledging the injustices, displacement, and harm Indigenous peoples have endured.

As Dominicans committed to truth, justice, and peace, we are called to listen to Indigenous voices, learn from their experiences, honor their wisdom, and work toward healing and right relationships. May this day deepen our commitment to respect the dignity of every person and care for our common home. 🙏🏽

🎨 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Adele Rowland, OP 🎨

A visionary artist and pioneering photographer, Sr. Adele Rowland, OP, brought together art, faith, and creativity in extraordinary ways. A contemporary of Ansel Adams, she perfected an intricate analog photomontage process that helped establish her unique artistic voice. As a professor and Artist-in-Residence at Dominican College, she viewed art as a ministry of preaching, inviting others to discover the divine in nature and everyday life. 🌿

Her internationally exhibited work earned her the Fra Angelico Award for Lifetime Excellence in Art and is held in major collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). Through her artistic vision, Sr. Adele demonstrated how creativity can reveal beauty, deepen reflection, and bring people closer to the sacred. 🖼️🙏
