A Win for Wildlife & Wetlands:
GMX Scraps 14-mile 836 Extension!

In an action that reflects the consistent position our organization (Tropical Audubon Society) has taken over many years, the Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX) has voted to abandon the proposed 14-mile Kendall Parkway extension of SR 836, instead directing staff to consider a shorter, 4-mile elevated extension to Southwest 8th Street. The original proposal would have extended a major toll road beyond Miami-Dade County’s Urban Development Boundary (UDB), and deeper into environmentally sensitive Everglades wetlands in western Miami-Dade County.

While financial and cost/benefit considerations appear to have influenced the decision, this outcome also underscores years of advocacy, public engagement, scientific analysis and legal action that highlighted the project’s significant environmental risks. According to a June 11 Miami Herald report, potential environmental impacts factored into their decision: “GMX leaders contend other planned improvements of local roads that already connect the 836 to Kendall — the widening of Southwest 137th and 157th Avenues — weaken the case for spending billions on a multi-lane expressway that would be built on environmentally sensitive lands in the western part of Miami-Dade," — issues TAS has been raising for years.

Want to give your garden a botanical glow that's also great for wildlife? Florida native plants can put on a show. Think sunshine yellow, powder pink, bright white, ruby red, and the gloriously gaudy fuchsia American Beautyberry. This isn’t just eye candy. Native blooms and berries attract butterflies, bees and songbirds, transforming any garden into a chorus of fluttering wings, buzzing bees and sweet birdsong.
