While in Tallahassee, our team had the honor of meeting with the Florida Department of Education Vice-Chancellor for Strategic Improvement, Dr. Margaret Aune, and its Deputy Legislative Affairs Director, Ms. Sarah Moosbrugger.

We had a great conversation about advancing our Florida Student School Board Member Initiative and look forward to continuing this very important collaboration with the FL Department of Education.

While in Tallahassee our Executive Director, Maurits Acosta, met with Gadsden County Public Schools School Board Member Stacey Hannigon about promoting student representation on FL school boards through our Florida Student School Board Member Initiative.

We are grateful for Board Member Hannigon’s time and are excited to start this partnership with Gadsden County over the next few weeks.

The Virtutem Populo Team was excited to attend the Florida Children’s Week Award Dinner in Tallahassee, FL.

We were able to connect with many different Florida advocates and share our vision for increased student representation across our state.

Most importantly, we celebrated and honored Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jose Dotres for his work as an advocate for all Miami-Dade students. The VP Team is grateful to Dr. Dotres, a previous guest on the Civic Action Podcast, for his dedication to our school district.

Dr. Dotres was nominated and presented his award by none other than VP’s Assistant Deputy Director, Clint John!

Attention all Miami Dade County students‼️: Virtutem Populo is hosting its 2nd annual Youth Governance Day on June 6th, 2025! This one-of-a kind program allows high-school students to serve as Mayor for the Day in their cities, or Representative for the Day in a Constitutional Office!

Student applications are currently open and will be closing on April 30th, 2025. Students from 9th-12th grade are welcome to apply. Applications can be found at virtutempopulo.org 💙❤️

We are thrilled to announce that Virtutem Populo has received a generous $3,000 grant from Aetna Better Health of Florida to support our Florida Student School Board Member Initiative (FL SSBMI).

Our SSBMI activation day was a success! This initiative empowers youth to actively participate in local education governance, fostering a more civically engaged society. Aetna Better Health’s commitment to community investment and addressing social determinants of health makes them an invaluable partner in our mission. We want to thank Aetna Better Health of Florida CEO Jennifer Sweet for joining us on this special occasion and Community Outreach Manager Matthew Stewart for being there for us every step of the way.

We are also very grateful that School Board Member Luisa Santos and Miami-Dade PTA President Osmani Gonzalez joined us in affirming that student representation on Florida School Boards is essential to ensuring all stakeholders are taken into account during the educational decision making process.

We also want to thank the Town of Miami Lakes and Vice Mayor Bryan Morera for hosting us in their chamber.

Together, we’re paving the way for a brighter, more involved future for our students. Because when students lead, Florida thrives!

Our Youth Empowerment Program is making waves with incredible student-led initiatives. Virtutem Populo, Inc.’s Civic Action Fellowship aims to empower individuals with a passion for community service by providing them with a mini $200 grant to kickstart their initiatives, community projects, or nonprofit organizations. Our mission is to enhance civic engagement through advocacy, education, and programming, and we believe this fund will catalyze positive change within our communities.
