We’re excited to share that current Oolite Arts residents Gonzalo Hernández and Ricardo E. Zulueta have been selected to participate in No Vacancy, Miami Beach 2026!

Presented by the City of Miami Beach, No Vacancy brings together 12 artists to create site-specific installations across 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels.

At Sherry Frontenac Oceanfront Resort, Gonzalo will unveil “AMERICA,” a monumental textile installation that draws on the colors of seven South American flags to explore ideas of national identity, migration and belonging.

At The Betsy Hotel, Ricardo will present “Rising Glitch Levels,” an experimental video installation mapped and projected onto the hotel’s iconic Orb, combining animation, glitching, and ambient sound to evoke adaptation, transformation, and renewal through digital imagery, color, and movement.

We’re proud to see our residents taking part in this exciting program, alongside several Oolite Arts alumni who are also featured in this year’s edition.

Join us this Wednesday, Oct. 21, for a Windows @ Walgreens walking tour and reception!

Meet artists Beatriz Monteavaro (Studio Resident 2000-2004) and Jillian Mayer (Studio Resident 2018- 2019; Creator Award 2018; Cannonball 2012) and explore their new exhibitions:

“Marseille Drive,” by Beatriz Monteavaro, reflects on her family’s early years in the United States through fragmented childhood memories of life in North Beach.
On view at 74th Street and Collins Avenue.

“Mayer Objects,” by Jillian Mayer, brings her sculptural practice into everyday life through limited-edition objects handcrafted from ceramics, glass and metal.
On view at 67th Street and Collins Avenue.

The walking tour runs from 7–8 p.m., beginning at “Marseille Drive” on 74th Street and ending at “Mayer Objects” on 67th Street. A reception will follow from 8–9 p.m. at Norman’s Tavern.

Both exhibitions are on view through Jan. 10, 2027.

Meet SHARES 2026 artist Frances Trombly.

Working primarily with fiber and textiles, Frances explores the relationship between textiles and painting, challenging traditional ideas of how a painting is made and supported.

For this year’s SHARES edition, Frances created “Held 01–50,” a series of handwoven and dyed works that draw attention to the structures, tools and labor behind their making. Here, the process becomes part of the work itself, with color in the warp preserving traces of touch, tension and the artist’s hand.

SHARES members receive five original works of art for $1,000, including works by Oolite Arts alumni Amanda Linares, Mark Delmont, Lee Pivnik, Frances Trombly and a mystery artist.

Gabriel’s feature film “The Old Man and the Parrot” will screen at the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival alongside a selection of LGBTQ+ short films from South Florida, highlighting the region’s vibrant filmmaking community and diverse voices.

What stories can you tell through fabric?

Oolite Arts alum Laura Marsh is bringing her textile practice to the classroom with two upcoming fiber art workshops.

Known for using fabric, text and embroidery to explore social issues and personal stories, Marsh invites the community to get creative and explore these techniques for themselves.

Drawing on his experience leading London’s Hayward Gallery and the 2019 Venice Biennale, Rugoff will share his perspective on contemporary art and curatorial practice today.

See what our alumni are up to:

Jen Clay (2020 and 2026 Home + Away, 2020–2022 Studio Resident) presents “I’ve seen a bird before,” a solo exhibition opening Oct. 17 at Baker—Hall in Miami.

Created primarily during her 2026 Oolite Arts Home + Away Residency at MASS MoCA, the immersive quilted textile installation features a colorful landscape of pink and purple trees inhabited by mysterious birds. Through playful forms and unsettling details, Clay explores themes of anxiety, ecological change, and the tension between comfort and fear.

“I’ve seen a bird before” is on view Oct. 17 through Nov. 21 at Baker—Hall. Join the opening reception Saturday, Oct. 17, from 6–9 p.m.

Oolite Arts Conversations closes out the year with Cuauhtémoc Medina, one of the most influential voices in contemporary art today.

Join us on Nov. 12 for a public talk with the Mexico City-born curator, critic, and historian, whose work has shaped major institutions and exhibitions around the world, from Tate Modern to the Shanghai Biennale.

Known for rethinking art world conventions, Medina creates dialogues across generations and geographies, approaching art as a space for historical inquiry and civic debate. His work has brought greater attention to artistic practices and perspectives from Latin America and the Global South while exploring the ideas, histories, and politics shaping contemporary art today.
