Fotomission

Fotomission A non-profit organization dedicated to photography for social change Photography is a powerful language; it is the language of light.

Fotomission is a volunteer operated 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to teaching and promoting photography, as well as producing artistic and documentary exhibitions, publications and presentations of significant and socially conscious photographic endeavors. With it we strive to understand and shed light on the complexities of human activity, its dependence on its causes and in conne

ction with its effects, not merely in relation to how it affects us as individuals, but our world as a whole. No other form of communication or expression has done as much to transform our sense of self, our daily lives and our society as the photograph. Photography is probably the most influential medium of the modern era. Our mission is to utilize artistic and documentary photography as a means for creating positive social change.

⚠️ WARNING: VIEWING THE SUN THROUGH A DSLR

If you point a DSLR at the sun and look through the optical viewfinder, your lens can focus the sun’s energy directly onto your retina, just like a magnifying glass burning paper. Damage can be instant and permanent.

The risk is highest with:
• Long telephoto lenses
• Wide apertures
• Low sun angles (sunset/sunrise)
• Eclipses or partially obscured sun

SAFE-ISH ALTERNATIVES

(Still use common sense)

• Use Live View — let the sensor and LCD take the hit, not your eye
• Keep the lens pointed at the sun only as briefly as needed
• Avoid high-magnification setups unless you are using proper solar filters
• Never leave a camera aimed at the sun unattended
• If you feel heat coming from your camera, you waited too long

Remember:

A sensor is replaceable. A retina is not.

Share this with anyone who shoots sunrises and sunsets, most don’t realize the danger until it’s too late.
